In Episode 7 of the Echo Play Podcast, the hosts broadcast from the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth, where they discuss playing a private event in the Ridglea Room. The conversation weaves through various topics, including memories of playing at the Ridglea, the history of the venue, and the challenges and rewards of performing at private events, particularly weddings. They share humorous and insightful stories about past wedding performances, including how guests from larger weddings often migrate to their smaller, more fun events.
The hosts also delve into the intricacies of working in the music scene, comparing the challenges of original bands versus cover bands in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They reflect on their own experiences with DJing weddings, handling wedding planners, and the financial realities of working in music as they get older. The episode wraps up with a discussion on the changing music industry, the impact of social media on success, and a desire to bring in more guests for future episodes to explore these topics further.
Private Party Performances and 90s Weddings
Speaker 1Welcome everybody to the Echo Play podcast , episode seven . Already at seven we are . You're gonna hear creaky , chairs , creaky and who knows what else throughout this session , because we are in a storage room at Ridgely .
Speaker 2At Ridgely Theater . Yeah , old stomping grounds . I haven't been to Ridgely in a very long time . Tonight we're playing a private event on the secondary room , which is really cool , really cool setup , very much a tour vibe setup , yep .
Speaker 1First time I came here was with the Tools and it was with Kill House , believe , and um , they put together like the show , because I know the the lady that that owns the place . I think she's the owner , but , um , yeah , love the vibe I would love to do the theater at some point that's kind of theater .
Speaker 2I did theater back in the day and theater is fun everyone talks about how fun it is . It is fun if there's a lot of people in the theater . Theater is not fun if there's a lot of people in the theater . Theater's not fun if there's , like you know , 100 people yeah . But if you have like 800 people .
Speaker 1I haven't poked my head in . I think I didn't poke my head in there because I haven't seen it , like I've only seen the stage .
Speaker 2There's a nice little jazz action going in there tonight .
Speaker 1Yeah , which is funny because that's what's happening .
Speaker 2the last time I was here really was like some jazz act maybe it's like a maybe that's a thing , a reoccurring thing for them I , I guess . So I mean , I I heard , and I don't know how much you know about this drama , but I heard there was like some metal scene drama oh , there was yeah , we're like , I think it was black dolly murder they didn't want them here , or something like that and like I thought something happened and like they trashed the place or like some I don't know , something happened .
Speaker 1Words were said and they were like no more metal bands and , um , recently there was a metal fest here . So I'm not sure what the story is , but maybe they came . They came around , well heck yeah . There's money out there . There's definitely money out there In the metal scene .
Speaker 2Um , yeah , the metal scene . Yeah , I also have a correction from the last show . I said something incorrect and I listened back to it and I was like that's wrong . Blindside is from Sweden . They're not from Wales . Sweden , wales is like Funeral for a Friend . That band is from Wales .
Speaker 1Really , yeah , oh , I didn't know that . Yeah , now we got a fact .
Speaker 2check no that one's 100% true . I met those guys , those guys like he even said you met them .
Speaker 1Yeah , really .
Speaker 2Yeah they played at . It was really cool because they played at this big festival or whatever and like they were on a side stage and I was so super pumped on seeing them at the time . So I was over there watching the side stage and afterwards , like the singer just came down and started just chatting .
Speaker 1Dude , they are amazing . They Dude , they are amazing , they're fun . They're incredible , like I . What is it we were going to cover ? It in the band oh I remember , it's the girl in the front of the locker .
Speaker 2Which is the second album . I think it's Hours . Is it Hours or something ?
Speaker 1Okay , and then ?
Speaker 2I totally forgot what it's called dude the Deep in Conversation album was before that Roses for the Dead , roses for the Dead .
Speaker 1That's it . That's got the the cool tapping guitar part in the beginning . Oh , that song , dude , so sad , so good . Um then I only really listened to that record and I found out they did a record after that , did a record after that that was like heavy dude , like not like you know balls heavy , but pretty heavy , like heavier than that previous record , and it had a purple a purple cover to it checking out , and I don't know if I dove back into them after , after , after that one .
Speaker 1Yeah no , that's good . It's good they're . They're great songwriters , dude . That's how they're fun .
Speaker 2It's fun music too yeah , I agree . Funeral for a friend which is a elton john song oh , all right , we're going . We're just going deeper man yeah , well , you know , after I messed up and said , uh , wales instead of sweden , I'm like I have to be on top of my you're like it's like 2 am , I can't . Yeah , you're going down wikipedia . I'm just mad at myself . How could I ? How ?
Speaker 1could I say that that's funny . Well , um , we kind of I don't know if we really planned on saying that , but I want to say it that today , like I think we already said , we're doing something special , um , doing a nice little show , um , at ridgely , which is a private party , and I just want to say that is so damn cool , that's very cool . We get to do stuff like that very cool .
Speaker 2Someone , someone chose to hire us , like to play something like that and you know private parties like they're not cheap , no , and like just the fact that someone was and that the person who hired us here has only seen us . I think two , maybe three shows total , really . Yeah , they came to a Magnolia motor lounge show and saw us there and uh , talk to and saw us there and talked to him for a while . His name is Jeff . Yeah , man , hit us up and ask what we charged and if we're available for this date . That's awesome , yeah , super cool . It's just really cool when you get hired for private shows because those people want you there . They're not coming out to randomly see you , they want you there Enough to carry the night , which is so cool .
Speaker 1Everyone nowadays is a the night which is so cool , like everyone . Everyone nowadays is a dj . You know , like , which is which is cool ? I mean whatever floats your boat , but like having a band come up and I don't know , just run your night for you , just yeah , like we're doing three hours so just being able to like , have enough chemistry with a band to be like I want them for the night .
Speaker 1You know , what I mean , like it's so cool , I'm so humbled to do that stuff , it's so awesome . Um , we haven't done . Oh , we have a wedding coming up , but we haven't done many weddings recently .
Speaker 2We have a wedding coming up .
Speaker 1I thought we did December .
Speaker 2Yeah oh , it's a corporate party , that's oh . Never mind corporate party , that's a whole other .
Speaker 1We'll get to corporate parties , but those are .
Speaker 2Those are fun too , weddings , man , weddings are fun uh , I haven't done many .
Speaker 1I think we did . We've done two , two or three since I've joined the band uh , it sounds about right .
Speaker 2I think , all in all , we've done . We've done probably like 10 .
Speaker 1Maybe that's a lot um well , I mean , it's a lot for a 90s cover band .
Speaker 2Because it's very specific to have a 90s cover band at your wedding , you know , as opposed to like a band that covers all the generational stuff . Right , like you got what we play and that's it . Right , and so yeah . Don't sit the older folks by the speakers , they ain't going to be down with it we , yeah , we've gotten some looks yeah we've gotten some looks before .
Speaker 1um , some people just aren't down with the volume there , especially with old Mr Harper and that snare yeah , he don't have , unless he switches to brushes he can turn it down a little bit , but it's not as fun when you tone it down .
Speaker 1It feels like you're just going through motions and then you're thinking about it as you're playing , which is no fun , because now you're in your head like , oh I gotta play softer , but you play a heavier song and you're like this is weak . This is not as fun . You start playing slower , you lose energy , but weddings are fun .
Speaker 1And I hope more people come around to bands . I hope more people you know kind of say no , I don't want a traditional wedding . I want a 90s rock band to come play . I want a 90s rock band to play my wedding , which I will say too .
Wedding Band Stories and Memories
Speaker 2Our shows have produced at least six married couples , oh yeah , and we've played probably three of the weddings for those the dicks have ordained people .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 2Like people have come to our shows and met their . I mean , I met my wife at our show . Yeah , Like again when she was older and she turned 21 , because I think she came out when she was 21 with my now brother-in-law , who was my friend , is still my friend then but yeah , yeah , and she came out and that's when we like met again because , like when she was younger .
Speaker 1So you were friends with her brother , yeah .
Speaker 2And her sister . Her sister used to come to our , like my original band shows . Yeah and so yeah .
Speaker 1Nice Dicks , bring people together .
Speaker 2yeah , man dicks fly together dicks fly together .
Speaker 1How many ? How many parodies can we put on a t-shirt ? How many have we done in the 14 years that I mean ?
Speaker 2I hope someone makes a quilt out there of our t-shirts . Yeah , and when I say a quilt , I mean probably five , because I've done so many shirts I'm kind of upset that we don't have a a wall or no have you not kept a pair at least of like each design ? No , I mean I have some of the like older ones , like just chilling in my closet , but yeah , um , now I could probably look up all .
Speaker 1I can definitely look up all the old ones and all the proofs of them and get the designs . I would we don't have to do anything with them , no , just have them yeah .
Speaker 2Maybe I'll post all of them to our Facebook , just so everyone can see them . Oh my God . You're freaking everyone out right now . Yeah , they're like ah , then they'll be like oh , this shit Not for sale .
Speaker 1Not for sale yet .
Speaker 2Yeah , yeah , maybe we'll do it . Maybe we'll do a poll and bring one back . Yep , if it gets enough votes on it , yep , I'm down with that .
Speaker 1Yeah , that'd be kind of fun . We did that before . I think we have to put like like anniversary edition though . So , like you know , the ogs that bought the first print yeah , it'll say round two on it somewhere yeah , yeah , like version version two of it yeah what are um what are some crazy stories from weddings that we've done from weddings .
Speaker 2Yeah , um well , most weddings are open bar to us , so , um , that's not saying much for me , um , but uh , they have been fun , they have been fun . What was Matt's drink of choice at um ? I ?
Speaker 1at the one wedding . I forgot what the . It was Prosecco and Prosecco and bourbon , or something .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1It was double fisting yeah .
Speaker 2And you're just walking around saying Matt was feeling real good about that night .
Speaker 1That's good . I remember one we did . The green room was like this balcony thing that was like just above everybody and it was this giant like very echoey room and they were below and we were at this balcony and we like couldn't really talk because it just carried hey , which one over the room . Uh , this was like I think it was fort worth . Oh , no , no it was .
Speaker 2It was , uh , my friend daria's wedding .
Speaker 1Yes , yes , the it had a photo booth and we yes we did the famous wedding picture . But remember , the green room was up the stairs , it was like this balcony . It was a great spot too , though it just echoed .
Speaker 2I remember my throat was about gone and I'm glad we only had to play for like an hour .
Speaker 1I think Mike and I went to this bar literally across the street from that place . It was a small bar . When I mentioned it they were like , oh yeah , street from that place if it was called but when I'm in a small bar I know exactly , right when I mentioned it , like oh yeah , I know that place , like I don't know this is the .
Speaker 2This venue is down by the um so the train tracks uh downtown , fort worth , where the uh tram is I love that area so cool .
Speaker 1When I was driving past , uh just now to go get our podcast stuff um , that building I don't know if you know what that building is it ? It's right off the freeway and it's this old architecture . I I think they're renovating it right now but it's running . I thought it was a train station or red somewhere there was a train station . But that building is so cool . I , when I was , when I first moved here and was doing like photography , videography and stuff , I was like like I got to get in there , I got to put it on the back .
Speaker 2Were the Bay Doors on the one side , it might , that might be it .
Speaker 1There's a T&P station over there . Okay , it looks like which is also a wedding venue . It looks like it's straight out of Ghostbusters , like that . Yeah yeah , yeah , that building was so cool . Sorry for the creaky chair there .
Speaker 2No , you're good , but uh anyway we had , um , I say uh , a couple of years before you were in the band , we had a venue we played at the Worthington downtown , fort worth . Um , it was for a wedding and we were in the small room on the side and there was a massive wedding going on in the big room with a big wedding band , huge setup . I mean this room was like four times the size of the one that we were in and we're , you know , we start playing and we're playing like , and it's like everyone's having a blast like in this small room . That's where the party is pretty much .
Speaker 2You look over the double doors and you see like there's a crowd at the double doors , you're like what the hell is going on ? And so like we're right close to break . And so we take a break . And I walk out there and this couple talks to me and said , hey , we're from this other wedding . Do you guys think that they would care if we came over here ? And I was like , well , you're all from this really big wedding over here . And they're like yeah , but like this sounds so fun . And so the bride and groom came over there , like yeah , I don't care .
Speaker 2And so .
Speaker 1But the bride and groom of the small , of the small smaller wedding , like and I say smaller , it was still a big wedding .
Speaker 2Yeah , yeah , you know , but like the other room was just so massive , yeah , and so uh our second set starts and like the floor is doubled in size like there's so many people and I see this older lady come through the doors and ream this couple about like , like , they need to be at the other wedding and they were in trouble and I thought that was the coolest thing ever , the fact that everyone was like I'm going to that one .
Speaker 2It's like the Titanic where , like the posh people are seeing , are seeing the the commoners in the smaller room , rocking out to 90s , and they're like uh , they had one of those , you know like the generic , like wedding bands that are playing top 40s and like we just go on and it's like , it's like a rock show ?
Speaker 1how many times can you hear bruno mars ?
Speaker 2you know , yeah , and that kind of stuff yeah , and so , man , that was super cool , like everyone was over there hanging out partying and that was a fun show . Yeah , that was a really fun show .
Speaker 1Yep , it's . That's funny man . It's probably like the mom or something like .
Speaker 2How dare you , she was . Yeah , that lady was not happy grand on this . Well , I think the deal was that in that hallway right there was the bathroom . So everyone went to the bathroom like walked by and saw it's like , it's like a teaser , yeah so they kept like looking in and looking and all of a sudden there's like a crowd yeah , like that was , that was probably my favorite story , yep , from a wedding , just because it was so cool that everyone wanted to come in there and hang out with us .
Speaker 1It's dude because I mean , you know , I ran sound for years before I joined the band and weddings were , I mean , they pay great , like they're typically pretty easy . It's high stress , but it's also very cookie cutter .
Speaker 2There's always a wedding planner who's telling you well exactly what you have to do I've .
Speaker 1I've had both dude . I've had ones where they are just up my ass and I've had others where it's like , okay , here's where you are and thank you , you know , and that like . That's it , like they expect me to know what I'm doing and I know what I'm doing . I mean we're we're paid well for it , so we're bringing your A game to a wedding . But after doing I mean probably 40 , 50 weddings , um , running sound , it's like it . It is amazing how they're all copy paste , like all of them . It just makes me like man I have no desire to do like a cookie cutter wedding you know , it's .
Speaker 1It's just so funny because everyone you know it's their their best day of their lives and everything has to be perfect . And then you get there and it's like that , I don't know . It's like looking behind the curtain of like , because to them it's that's their day . But to people that work weddings and they're there to like several weddings , it's it's the same thing . Dude , you got the same top 40 band . You got the same like songs the same dance songs and it's just like it's .
Speaker 1It's just funny how um they're just all the same did you know I dj weddings for
Wedding DJ Stories and Corporate Gigs
Speaker 1? Yes , for yeah , I did it for a little bit .
Speaker 2Uh , my friend jason , when he got married , was like dude , I want you to dj my wedding , I go , I don't dj and he goes , you can figure it out dude , that that's how it happens , yeah and I literally downloaded the , the djay app , the dj app on the ipad .
Speaker 1Yeah , which is great .
Speaker 2Yeah , it is um and I think I had it as a on my on my computer . Yep , and uh , I just was like I set their playlist and set everything up , but , like , when I was doing it , though , like I always asked the planners , I was like I need an itinerary ? Yep , and I stuck to itinerary . Better than the planners digs . I'm like nope , it says right here , you're doing this right now . Is that what we're doing ? Are we pushing back , like you know ? Like constantly , like seeing what they're trying to do ? Um , but to me , like djing a wedding , that was more high . I was high stress , I hated it , so high stress . It's like , and like I had one . I had one people come , uh , one lady come to me and she was like you played that , like for the father-daughter dance . She was like you played the wrong song . I was like like I played this song right here , that's on my itinerary . She goes , we changed it . I go . You have to tell me that you can't just change it and all of a sudden , poof , that goes into existence .
Speaker 1You have to let me know . That's one thing with weddings that you have to know . If you work a wedding , you work for everybody . They all think they control you and they're the boss .
Speaker 2The bride told me she was like oh , you're good , I wasn't worried about it . Yeah , cool , that's usually how it goes , dude , her bridesmaid . That was like flipping out the bride's usually the chill one .
Speaker 1It's everyone else that is freaking out .
Speaker 2This is her day .
Speaker 1Yeah , exactly , but I .
Speaker 2It was her day .
Speaker 1Luckily it was the singer or the keyboard player , because they would run the tracks and everything and have everything pre-built . It was a good system , um , so I didn't have to deal with that . I was just like I tell me what you want me to do and I will do it , and I don't have to negotiate , i't have to delegate . I don't do any of that stuff with anyone at the wedding . So that was a great part of doing sound . But DJing , yeah , it's like you're in constant flux .
Speaker 2You're in a constant state of like You're always getting asked to play the dumbest song . Oh , yeah . And there's people going can you play this ? Can you play yeah ?
Speaker 2Or if you you played it like three songs ago , yeah , and then we'll play it again and I'm like I had one guy who , like I remember he was like he wanted to dance with this girl , but he only wanted to slow dance . He's like can you play something slow ? I had so many weddings where I forgot to play slow songs because people were dancing and partying the entire time . You don't want to kill the vibe .
Speaker 1You don't want to kill . The's a roller coaster , right ? You can't just like blip , blip , blip . You know you got to . Okay , we're going to do like a slow and then you do a semi-slow and a slow . Then bring it back up . You can't just go like bloop , bloop , bloop , because you're going to lose people , you're going to lose interest . It's nerve wracking . Glad you got out of it . Yeah , I'm super glad I got out of it .
Speaker 2It was actually that show where they told me I played the wrong song was my last show .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 2Or my last wedding .
Speaker 1It's usually not a bad experience , and I was like well , I knew it right .
Speaker 2then I was like I don't want to do this again anymore .
Speaker 1I quit .
Speaker 2I got asked a couple times after that and I was like , no , I got rid of all my stuff . I should stick to cover bands from now on .
Speaker 1It's kind of no nonsense too , At least the way we try . I feel like we're very easy .
Speaker 2Yeah , Even the sound guy tonight was like do you guys need anything else ? No , man , we're good .
Speaker 1If there are problems , it's usually because people create problems . Yeah , I don't know , don't be those people . Yeah , avoid that . Please . Don't be those people . Yeah , Avoid that . Please . Just have a good time , you know , don't make it about you , don't ? I don't know why I'm preaching to imaginary people that ruin weddings , but anyway .
Speaker 2It's because we've all been hurt .
Speaker 1We've all been burned by those people .
Speaker 2Yep , and then we had a . Let's see , we got corporate gigs too . Yeah , super fun . We have one uh this year in December , uh in the stockyards , um we did a for the police station , that one that one . Okay , we played in a massive uh , it was dude , that day , that day freaked me out . It was ice outside . Yes , yeah , it was very bad ice and I don't know if that affected the turnout , but the turnout . We were in a massive room with like 60 people I'll start with this because we'll lead up .
Speaker 1We'll lead up into that show because that day this is when I was still running sound and doing the band . So , like I , there was a period in time when I was running sound for the dicks and then also playing bass , so I had to go get the gear right . And where I lived at the time in Kennedale , this was during what year was it when everything froze over like really bad just every year in like January February well , it was like frozen , like cars could not move that was like I mean , you joined in 2020 , so it's probably 2021 .
Speaker 1I know there's a big freeze that happened , it's probably 21 . There's a hill that I had to take to get to Dave Corley's house and I dude , I kid you not I went up that hill and my truck just stalls and then I start going back down like sideways , and I did that about three times . And this is I left super early to like make sure I could get there , get the gear and everything , and everything's fine with that amount of weight too is like scary well I didn't have the trailer yet .
Speaker 1Oh here , here's the the twist . So , like I would do that , go up the hill , come back down . I was like this isn't gonna work , I'm not gonna get this hill . Another truck tried alongside me and he got stuck . So I'm like I'm I'm going to screw this up . So I had to figure out a back way around the houses to get there and ended up finding one and there was another hill , cause you know it's up on a hill . So I gunned it , made it , got to the trailer , got hooked up , and after the trailer was hooked up to the truck , I had to wait so the back end of my truck wasn't peeling out , I wasn't losing traction , I actually , like , was more stable once I got the trailer on there and this is number three . So this is a big boy , and it was . I was white knuckling .
Speaker 2That's their rigs one , two and three , like that's how they label them .
Speaker 1Yep , I was white knuckling dude Like I probably got some more gray hairs that day because I was just like I'm under stress , I have to be there on time . I have a bunch of gear behind me , the roads are frozen , yep , but we got there and it was all good . It was chill , I think . I made it with plenty of time to spare , so we got set up pretty quick and turned out to be a really fun night .
Speaker 2It was fun . It was fun , like I said , there wasn't , like wasn't a lot of people there and I think when we started playing , like all the older people like bolted A lot of people were like what Cause ?
Speaker 1I think the people that brought us were like all the . It was like a nineties party . They were pumped . Right Cause they were wearing like joggers that were like nineties themed and that room was probably like an 800 cap , if not more .
Speaker 2It was big , it was big , it was a big room .
Speaker 1It was like a hotel conference room .
Speaker 2Yeah , it was technically called a convention center . Yeah , that's right Convention center , not Hearst , it was , I don't remember . Yeah Bedford , I don't know .
Speaker 1I don't know , yeah , bedford , I don't know I don't know , is this the one by that bar you guys played at ?
Speaker 2By Broncos yeah .
Speaker 1Yeah , you used to play at Broncos .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1That's right , Because we went to go , I think check it out beforehand or something .
Speaker 2Great , great spot .
Speaker 1Yeah , that was an interesting night . I remember the hallways were open like there was a fireplace going . Oh yeah , I was chilling out there .
Speaker 2I took a picture and sent it to my wife . She was like , oh cool . I remember that I was like just hanging out . They fed us . We had our own private room where they fed us whatever Catering . We walked through this curtain thing and I think it oh , that's right , we're not .
Speaker 1okay , we're not used to this , being pampered . That's great , dude . Some venues really take care of you . I love when they think about it and they , they have it on lock . Some venues just don't get it like . I don't know , like , like we're just . You open up a box and there's a band , you know like . No , we're all people .
Speaker 2We need food , we need , like you know , I think like it's so it's so nice to see , especially if you've done like touring and stuff like that and you've seen like where you show up and there's nothing . No , you know , it's , it's , it's , it's a nice surprise and so funny that we do cover songs and it's a better living yeah than it is doing .
Speaker 1Original songs yeah , and I think that's , I think that's pertinent to hear , like for sure , like here dfw's the dfw scenes like that .
Speaker 2It's massive yeah , that's all I see . Like there's always like the like shows that are out as his cover and tributes yep , you know , like the national acts come through town , I could not tell you a original act in dfw right now . That's how much I don't see them . Yep , I'm sure they play , you know , down in deep ellen , but like , yep , I don't miss that grind , like , by any means I don't know and dude that that's a whole .
Speaker 1We'll say save that .
Speaker 2I take it back For original bands . Thieving Birds Okay , original band local shout out Thieving Bird .
Speaker 1We'll save that for another episode , because I think that's a great topic that is so controversial here , at least with because there is still a scene trying to make it .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1And they get real heated with like the trying to make it . Yeah , and they get real heated with the cover and tribute scene .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1But it's so big here that when I came from it was kind of like a joke , Like oh , you're in a cover band , yeah . Or you're in a tribute band . You come here and it's like oh , you're an original band , yeah , you're original .
Speaker 2That's original yeah it's interesting .
Speaker 1Yeah , you're original . That's original .
Speaker 2Yeah , it's interesting it still doesn't feel cool saying like you know , if someone tells someone like you want to come see my friend's cover band . You know just that sentence itself .
Speaker 1you're like oh , not really yeah .
Speaker 2You know , luckily people have come out to see us after that sentence and it's been good .
Speaker 1Yeah , going strong still , yeah , but we'll cover that . Another cause there's a lot to say to that and I want to get some more people in on it , cause I think it's it's interesting to talk about for sure .
Speaker 2Yeah , I wouldn't mind actually bringing an ace on to talk about like what he's , you know , seen with stuff and touring around and like the you know they play .
Speaker 1Is this Poo Live ?
Speaker 2No , Ace is Thieving Birds , so he's got the original side of it now and then have , like you know , in comparison , I mean we can speak to the cover side of it , for sure too .
Speaker 1Well , I know Kevin too , who plays bass in my other bands . I mean he tried it for a long time with Eye of the Villain and I think a couple others . I mean everybody , everybody did it .
Speaker 2You get to a point , though , where you can't really do that you can't put that effort in . There's a time in your 20s and 30s where you're like , man , I'm going to do it , I'm going to bust ass , I'm going to get out there , I'm going to do it . There gets a point where bills are due .
Speaker 1We all have nine to five jobs , um , but I mean , you know , luckily this scratches the itch of playing and yep , and then we still you know , we still make good money off of it too yeah , yeah it's , it is nice , it's like just enough to be like this is what I'm spending my weekends on , you know , and like justifying spending my weekends on it because , because I mean there are times where I mean mainly with myself , because I got five things , five other projects going on and then on top of work and you know you almost have to like time is currency , you know , and like trying to figure out your economy with time and schedule and like what is worth what and how do you justify
Navigating the Music Industry Challenges
Speaker 1it ?
Speaker 2We should figure out how to do this podcast half the time .
Speaker 1Exactly . We're trying to figure out like what we can request before the show tonight , because that's when we're together . Well , exactly that's a it . Always it tails something you know like it . It is a add on to what's already happening . You know , because you have to be intentional with your schedule and all that Make you know cause .
Speaker 2you have to be intentional with your time work for you Exactly .
Speaker 1So it's , uh , it's good . Um , we're really lucky dude and I think we say that every podcast but like we're so lucky to be able to do this and make enough money to not have our partners kill us .
Speaker 2Yeah , like where it's like we're not just going to hang out , like we also are contributing .
Speaker 1Right , it's like we're not just going to hang out , we also are contributing .
Speaker 2We're going out and we're contributing and bringing something home which is always , like you know , Especially nights like tonight , like private gigs . Courtney , you don't care . Yeah cool , go get that money .
Speaker 1Yeah , exactly At the same time we're going to have fun . Yeah , it's different , dude . When you're pushing 40 , you're in your 40s and we're gonna get that record deal , man .
Speaker 1Like you know , I mean it's a , it's a , it's a nice I I really applaud you guys on your effort and like keeping up with that . But it's just , it's tough man and , and you know what , you may have an awesome career and that's like what you're doing , you're pushing forward . Than that that's great . But I think there's this time that all of us have to like come to terms with where you know wait a minute where we can .
Speaker 2Where'd my life go ?
Speaker 1like it . I . I felt that way when I made it like and got to tour and got to do all that stuff . After a couple of years I was like , look , this is great , but I'm coming home to nothing like I have . I have nothing to my name , I have nothing in my bank account . I think early on .
Speaker 2It's nice , you know , because you don't have to fret as much about your bank account and you know other stuff like that , like so , yeah , you can enjoy the the bucket list trips exactly you know more , so but like if you're doing it more in your 30s and like up in your 40s like you're like I gotta figure out how I don't think I don't think they think about it , you know , because it's like it may be , because it's just , it's this like illusionary wall of like you know you got there now what you know .
Speaker 1And it's like you're you're 40 dude , like you're you're even mid-30s , like do you want to be on the road all the time and not have the stability of a , a home or a job , like the guys that get that are been doing it for years .
Speaker 2You know like show up and play a show . And you got someone that's a viral success down the street , that , like you know , did a song on Tik TOK and all of a sudden , like that's where everyone's at .
Speaker 1Oh God , we all feel like clowns after that though yeah , like dude , seeing how much these youtubers and tiktokers make , it's like it's like so the industry is now reversed of what it used to be .
Speaker 2You know , like now , like you got to hit that flash in the pan and then you can work your way down , like you know well , you hit the flash in the pan , and then you be smart about your money that's the big thing with a lot of these guys .
Speaker 1They're everyone that like gets , you know , the , the viral hit or the viral whatever . Okay , great , you got a big check . Now you got to invest , you got to put it towards something , because then you just they blow on cars or whatever houses and just like , oh , all the money's gone and even shows like , uh , like , um , american idol .
Speaker 2Yeah , like you know , it's reversed . Like you're , you're learning about these people , first , yep , and you're getting to hear their voice and you're getting like familiar with them , and then they win , get a record deal . And you do that as opposed to like hearing someone for the first time , looking into them , figuring them out , learning about them Yep , you know it's reversed , weird .
Speaker 1Yep , reversed weird yeah , well , that was a lot of topics in 10 minutes , yeah , yeah , but all good um , we kind of we kind of just freestyle most , I think . I think I need to like I'll write all that down that we just covered and like we need to branch out into different episodes and talk about all that , because there's a lot to cover there .
Speaker 2Yeah , we can just , we can just listen back to it , I definitely want to get some more people in on some next episodes too .
Speaker 1We want to get some other bands in here and yeah , I mean listeners .
Band Interviews and Music Scene Talk
Speaker 1If you guys want to comment on what you'd like to hear and some bands you'd like us to , you know , shoot the shit with and talk to , let us know . And obviously we're going to rotate with our group of friends and we'll go from there . I'd love to talk to some other bands . Let us know . And uh , obviously we're going to rotate with our group of friends and , uh , we'll go from there . I'd love to talk to some other bands and just kind of talk about the scene , because we all live in it and we'll get .
Speaker 2We'll get Michael's new voice back in here at 1.2 . It was a request .
Speaker 1Yeah , all right , y'all , we will see you . On the next one Yep . On the next one yep .
