Speaker 1I think I made a list you're way ahead of me then well , it was like a year ago , so I don't know .
Speaker 1I don't know if it's accurate , but I know most of them off the top of my head , so most I can go first , in no particular order . I would say that what my first record would be for a pivotal , like holy cow moment for me , this isn't . This one isn't really attributed to , I'd say , a time in my life , but just a record that front to back , I listen to it and it takes me away and I think that's lost in the sound of separation by under oath . Okay , that album , it was , had two producers . I believe it was matt something , who did um drums . It was incredible , interesting . Yeah , so they had it was a really interesting thing where they Adam Duckowitz , who is a guitar player for Kill Switcher Cage he's an amazing producer , by the way . Yes , he did the vocals , guitar and bass , like the instrument part of it .
Speaker 2And then they had Matt something dude , I forget his name but he did drums with aaron and , uh , that album they have , there's a documentary on it and I don't know , dude , it's just so good , too many name drop right now . Do you want me to text aaron and ask him gillespie ? Yeah , I'll text him . Yeah , bro , I'll be like who the heck is this ?

Speaker 2We talked like 15 years ago yeah , I did t-shirts for on a quick turnaround when he was in town , because the sleeper guy was standing in my way . He'd have no idea who I am . He'd be like dude , can you lose my number please ?
Speaker 1I think about that when , Because we both toured , and during those touring times you collect phone numbers and it makes me wonder how many numbers do I have in my phone that have just been in there of like people that ?
Speaker 2especially the way you name them at the time , like you know , you'll like uh , you'll abbreviate the band name , so it's like like Travis Secret Lives be Travis SL . Yeah like .
Speaker 1Well , I don't know what that means , which I'm still so . I talked to Travis the other day .
Speaker 2You probably , you probably have a better phone book than I do , man man , I network super hard .

Speaker 2When we were on Warped Tour , my guys were drinking and just enjoying being on Warped Tour and I went to the trailer loaded my backpack up with shirts and I walked around to every band that I respected and liked and knocked on their door and walked in and handed them shirts . I had size medium , large and extra large in my bag and just was doing it .
Speaker 2Which is great , because on work tour everyone needs new shirts all the time because they're sweating through them constantly . So it was so funny . The next day all the guys were sitting at the merch table and all these dudes were walking around with our shirt on and all the guys were looking at me like what the heck ? And I'm like , yeah man .
Speaker 1That's right , dude . We're best friends .
Speaker 2I just walk around and talk to these people and whatnot . We're like buddies , man . Yeah , the ETID guys came up to our table and we're talking , or whatever like that you did . Yeah , and the guys in the band were like whoa , yeah dude , yeah dude .
Speaker 1like Keith and I talked all day , we're good .
Speaker 2Ryan was like dude , I'm coming with you next time . I was like yeah , man , I just want to meet people and talk to people . You're only on this for a little bit . Sorry , I got way off topic .
Speaker 1I wish I had that .
Speaker 2I'll be honest , that's probably my biggest regret on tour is being a hermit it's easy to do , though , because you want that alone time , but you have to drive yourself to be like let's go out . I didn't want to go Half the time , I did not want to go . Stay at people's houses . Man , I hate sleeping in discomfort , dude .
Speaker 1There's the next episode . Yeah , oh my God , the horror stories , yeah .
Speaker 2Oh man , seriously , that's episode seven . So episode six is movies . Episode seven is the horror stories movies . Episode seven is uh perfect stories .
Speaker 1We're lining them up , yeah , just of sleeping at different strangers , houses , on the road . We we left in the middle of the night with one of them because we were like you know that feeling , get the pen your stomach . You're like we gotta get out of here . All of us had it at the same time , like in sync , where we all were like we need to get the hell out . I'll sleep in the van and oh , yeah , yeah I love the the van .

Speaker 1That was my safe space . Yeah , that one bench and everyone had their same sleep arrangements . Yeah , you had your one bench and yeah , anyway , it sounds silly but you had to be there .

Speaker 2Well , not number one , but first one to mention you go , um , I have to go with the one that got me into like music in general , uh , which was , uh , core , by stone table pilots . Um , I was 1991 , I was in first grade I mean , I'm the only first grader with the stp shirt on , that's for sure but like I watched the plush video and it was , uh , it was , you know , scott Weiland . His hair's dyed like fire engine red , he's using a 55 microphone , there's a fish lens on the , on the camera , and I'm like this is the coolest thing I've ever seen and that's been like , I mean , for forever . That was my go-to album and I love . You know , purple is very good and Tiny Music Songs is a completely different album which they recorded the drums outside in a field which is super cool , yeah , very cool , because the CDs came with like DVDs back then so you can watch , like you know , additional stuff which was , you know , awesome at the time .
Speaker 2Now you just YouTube everything but that core album , man , and it's funny because my son , my 7 year old , almost 8 year old son , sings like 5 songs from that album , just walking around randomly , just like be singing like you know , just random songs from that album which is super cool . He did it around my mom the other day and my mom was like that was trippy because he was just started . Like he was like mumbling under his breath but I could tell he was singing stp . But uh , that , that core album , man , like it was , it's what got me more into rock . You know there was other albums before that , like spin doctors I think was the first time I ever bought . But it's not like it did not have the impact that core had . Core was like man , that man that was . That was it for me , like I was locked in what year was that ?
Speaker 191 , 91 . So okay , is that . That's not when the album came out , is it yeah ?
Speaker 2Wow , yeah , I believe it's nine , nine , 91 . Yeah , it's not 90, . It's not even my favorite song on the album . Wicked Garden is , I think , my favorite song on that album .
Speaker 1That's the with the cool guitar part in the beginning , right Wicked Garden , or I'm thinking a different one .
Speaker 2No , you're probably thinking of the Purple album , because they had yeah , interstate Love Song .

Speaker 1So yeah , so was Courtney Um yeah , my wife was one year old when I was rocking out to that . Uh , next one for me ? Um , probably , uh , well , I know what they are , but to I'll I'll take it way back . So , operation mind crime by Queensryche . Okay , you know Queensryche .
Speaker 1So dad had that record and it . I don't know like he listened to it , but I don't think you listen to like religiously , he just would put it on , but for some reason it like I latched onto it and this is like growing up , so you know , from zero to 10 or 11 , before junior high , right before I could like really go into like the music scene , but that album , dude , just stuck with me and then dad would explain the story where it was a concept album , which is a theme , I guess . Which is a theme ? I guess it just the story is like it's this like not mad scientist guy , but like you know , like this guy . He is this evil dude that the singer got this idea for from this guy at a bar that he saw it just looked menacing . So he got like what if he's like this crazy guy , that's like manipulating people with drugs ? So he wrote the whole album based on that idea and , uh , concept album . It's a concept album with um .
Speaker 1A concept album with like this guy was like controlling people with like drugs , basically , and it's this guy kind of going through all these different avenues to try and find purpose and it's really good . It's a great album , dude , and they couldn't really top it . I mean , empire is a great album . I think Empire came out after Mindcrime but they did Operation Mindcrime 2 , which I mean you're just trying to recreate what you did back in the day .
Speaker 1But that album to this day , even when I was a kid listening to it , it still sticks with me . I'll still put it on . And I was blown away and pumped when I found out that there is a Queensryche tribute here that , um , daniel Contreras I think it's last name a really great guy shreds , he's in a million different bands , but I think Taylor Dennis might've been into too , but um , they did walk in the shadows and their Queens are tribute and it was so cool , not only listening to them but being able to mix them play those songs that I grew up with . It was so cool and , yeah , I had that like a great moment with that perspective of like what you want to hear from it .

Musical Influences and Fan Interactions

Speaker 2But operation mind crime that's number two on the list I think , uh like and I'm not going in particular order , but going back to how pumped and into the album I was was White Pony by Deftones ? Yeah , because I think that album came out in the time of Napster and LimeWire , was it ?
Speaker 1in 2002 ? I can look real quick , because Adrenaline was Not Adrenaline . Adrenaline's the first one , right ? I should know this . Adrenaline's the first one .

Speaker 2Adrenaline is 97 , 98 . Let me see , I'm pulling them up right now . We're cheating right now . Yeah , 97 for Around the Fur , oh my gosh , yeah . So Adrenaline is 95 . Pony is 2000 . Yeah , just missed it . So when White Pony came out , there was like four versions you can get . There was the white album , there was the red album , there was the black album , I think there was a blue album , and they all had different additional song on them . They kind of did what Taylor Swift did now , where they just kept releasing stuff and you're like , well , I have to go buy that too . And that was one of the albums that I could definitely download all of them on Napster or LimeWire , but I wanted the booklets . So I went and bought , I bought every single one of those and I just remember being so excited . Do you still have ? Yeah , I do . You know what ? Okay , it's funny you say that because my buddy , josh , he's had my CD booklet from my car from high school for the past , like I don't know 15 years .
Speaker 1I feel like it's been a long time he gave it back to me the other day .
Speaker 2I started looking through that thing , I was like whoa yeah , Mine's long gone . I have no idea where it is . I don't know what to play them on . My car doesn't have a .
Speaker 1CD player .
Speaker 2We don't have a CD player in the house . Just put it in the PlayStation or Xbox , yeah something , but even my computer doesn't have a way to play it . But White Pony man , that was killer . I was so excited for that album and the drums on that album that album was good .
Speaker 1I remember hearing because that's still kind of before my time but the people that I knew that were around in that period , like Prime Music Time , they revere that album . It is just a massive , it's a pivotal record . So I knew there was some respect . A it's a pivotal record and so I knew there there was some respect for sure to put towards that record .
Speaker 1But , I think , uh , Kevin talks about it a lot where there's this different version of um back to school that I think it is that song , right , when it's it's slower . Yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah . He swears by that version versus the first one . He's like we should do that one live . I'm like dude , it's too slow . Man , it wouldn't , yeah , but when it kicks in it's like dun , dun , dun , dun , dun , dun dun . That's what he says too .
Speaker 2It's huge when it kicks in . But I mean it was do it . I would do it as an intro . You have yet to be to an elite show , right ? I don't think I have , especially not since James has been in there . You need to go . But if you all did that song , I would open my set with it . I would keep all the lights off . I would open my set with that one and then bring the lights on when it kicks in . Just huge . That would be killer . As a Deftones fan , I'd be like no way they're doing this .
Speaker 1I think we're doing Back to School but we're not doing Pink Maggot . Yeah so good .
Speaker 2You said you haven't heard it yet .
Speaker 1I have heard it , I have listened to it . That's why I was like it's too . I just think it'd be too slow . If people don't get it , they won't get it . You know , and like that's the hardest part of picking these songs . You know the struggle where it's like you could adore a track like love it , but if people don't get it you have to pull yourself out of it . I know .
Speaker 2I have two of those for the Dick Belding's right now stuck on you by failure . I want to play those songs . So bad and I don't think they would go over well live . They're huge , they're heavy , they're big , they're super fun , but I just don't .
Speaker 1It's kind of heartbreaking . People don't think about this . I guess anyone that listens to this podcast that sees us play live it's like all the songs we play for the I mean , most part . Some of them are crowd picks , but for the most part it's because we love those songs , yeah , and the new ones that we introduce occasionally it's because we , you know , adore those songs and we want to play it . And sometimes we go and play it . It just isn't dead on arrival and you just get so heartbroken because you're like , but this song is so good , it's so good why is no one like it .
Speaker 2I was afraid when we started playing Jeremy that Jeremy wouldn't go over well , but Jeremy's gone over really well .

Speaker 2It's just that it's not as popular , it's not as well-known crowds . You gotta play stuff that's like it's gonna hit every time . Like you know , we took it , we took a risk with some of our songs , like the fly has got you where I want you , and then that song everyone flips out when we play that song yeah , so that song dude the song is good every time I'm just like well I don't look at you .
Speaker 2I'm like all right , guys play the flies , walk around the stage , right now I guess , and they start playing it and the whole crowd's like just into it . Yeah , I love it . I love it Again . That's something else . That's a song that takes me to a time yeah , but I bought that album and that album is garbage . That song is good . The rest of that album is completely trash , I think you mentioned that live . Yeah , yeah . So that will not make my list of albums that are influential .
Speaker 1I think we've changed that movie too . Like we we first started . You're like yeah I think , it's not the faculty . I thought it was the faculty and then , like then we changed like it's the craft and now you're saying I never said the craft .

Speaker 2It is well , I'm not right . One of the girls that comes to our show , melanie she's the one that told me like it was disturbing behavior and I was like dang it . I've been saying the wrong one for like years now and yeah , she was right , so credit where credit's due .
Speaker 1That's like we played an elite show and I don't think it was james that that messed up lyrics on it . It might have been before with the old singer , but , um , someone came up and she's like you sang the chorus wrong on deftones . I'm like , oh sorry , she's like you know how , I know she pulls up she's got she's got the lyrics tattooed on her and she's like it's this , it's not like , so sorry , it's really nice and I appreciate everyone that comes to our shows Um cause they're really nice to me about it .
Speaker 2but like I will , I will mix tangle words in songs all the time and no one gives me like shit about it .

Speaker 2Atlantis is usually one that , uh , like I get it , I get that song correct 10% of the time . Yep , probably . Speaker 1You did say White Pony , Okay so it's you . Another one that takes me away , dude is Driving Down . Pch . During this time period in high school was an album , I think it was self-titled , called Shiny Toy Guns . Do you know the band Shiny Toy Guns ?
Speaker 2I'm not like overly familiar .
Speaker 1I'm like , yeah , this is the song that first album , dude , it was just like it came out and the girlfriend I had at the time we just would listen to that album all the time . Yeah , sorry , chelsea , we have , we have plenty of albums , but this is that one time where it I don't know like you , just it . Immediately I think the beach , like when I hear that album and , um , it's not even like it . It's a good album , it's a good record , but I listen to it now and it's like I don't know what about it , just like snatched , like that time period for me , but like it I don't know it's . That's one of those albums where it just it takes me away to a different time period in life . So I don't't know , that's one of those records I have one like that , which is the Apple Seed Cast Two Conversations album .
Speaker 2What , yeah , have you heard of it ? No , okay , the Apple Seed Cast , that was called Two Conversations , I don't know why , and I guess like I was driving around during Christmas time listening to this album in my car , but it's got like this , almost like you're in slow motion , and playing that album while looking at Christmas lights was like it fit so well together , and so I was like it's perfect for that , and so that album sticks in my head . For that reason , it's probably been like 15 years that I've actually sat down and listened to that album , but that album , but that album sticks out to me .

Personal Impact of Music Albums
Speaker 2I remember we were driving from LA to Vegas for a show and I had my headphones on and I put that album on , because we're just on that stretch of highway where there's nothing around but stars Right , and I put that on and I was in the front seat and I was like man , this is cool . Like that album is , it's a good album . It's a good album For me . It's around Christmas time . It might not be like that for everybody else , but it's weird . That album even made it in . But I'm picking it because of like how , like the impact it left on me and not necessarily because , like this is my favorite album because of this , you know , impact .
Speaker 1Yeah , yeah , I'm with you , man . Yeah , same thing . Um it just , it was that point in time and kind of just takes you there and that's forever imprinted now on that , that timeline , uh , next one are you lost in general . Quick hold on one second , truthless Heroes by Project 86 . Oh yeah , we talk about . We talk about Project 86 often that album dude .
Speaker 1So , uh , I grew up in the church . I think you did too , right ? No , I did not . You did not grow up in the church , michael did . Michael grew up in the church , michael did , that's right . Um , I never went to church . So , like , I went to church camp a lot and , uh , the youth pastor that I had at the time , um , well , it doesn't matter uh , he , huh , it's getting raunchy .
Speaker 1Just kidding , no , no he , he , um , like switched churches or something , but like we ended up going to the same camp at the same time . So we're at the , the shop , the music store , and I was like a different records . He's like dude , you know what ? Like , I'm gonna like this heavier stuff . And he pulled up project six true , those heroes , and 12 stones and um stones yeah , I got stories with that really , oh , dude , okay , let's talk about it .
Speaker 1But , um , truthless heroes . I bought it and that was like one of the first records I ever owned , that in a band called Dogwood . I don't know if you know Dogwood , but they're like a punk , christian punk band . Um , what are you listening to ? Yeah , that's it , little Green Men . Um , that , uh , that album , dude , it's so .
Speaker 1It's kind of the same thing with mind crime , where it's this guy like it's all , it's Christian , right . So like he's going through like the different , like the seven deadly sins , you know , like that kind of thing . Like where he's going through and like looking at um , like different avenues of life , trying to find fulfillment , and ends up getting to like the end of his life and realizing that none of it meant anything . And of course it comes into like salvation and all that stuff . But , um , it's so good . It's just one of those like the way Andrew does his lyrics and sings , mixed with Randy's guitar work . It reminds me a lot of like kind of what the use did , where it's like not like the same style , but how Quinn did , just different stuff , he played differently . I felt the same way about Randy's playing with that album and the drumming is so good , the bass is so good and I don't know . It just snatched me up , dude , and I've been a Project 86 fan ever since .
Speaker 2See , immediately , I was thinking of Draw black lines because that album , the album that I was yeah , I was into .
Speaker 1That's the one before and I heard , true , this year was first , and then um became a project six fan and then then her drawing back lines was like , oh my god , this is heavy . Yeah , drawing back lines was good . It was that first track on there , stein's theme . It's just like one last disc , dude , it's so heavy . Just this dissident chord in the beginning so good , it's so good , dude .
Speaker 2That whole album , everyone listen to that album , all these albums , listen to them and they're like again I'm not even saying favorite albums of all time , like I'm just like literally plucking out the ones that are like just I can like just have like a spot in history for me , yeah , you know . And the next one I'm gonna say , I'm gonna say for , for michael as well . Um , on behalf of michael , on behalf of michael , but behalf of Michael , both of you , but the band Open Hand . Open Hand had an album called you and Me , and I was going to school in Florida at the time for audio engineering at Full Sail , what yeah , what yeah . You never told me that . Yeah , I did nothing with it . That's not cheap , dude . It was like $35,000 at the time . Oh , okay , yeah , I went early , I went early , I was like 2003 .
Speaker 2Yeah , it was not that cheap when I looked yeah , I mean the school itself was cool . I probably should have gone for show production and not audio engineering , thinking about it in the long run , because I couldn't get an internship out of school .
Speaker 1So you got a full degree or like a AA .
Speaker 2Yeah , I got a two-year degree , okay , yeah .
Speaker 1Really yeah , so you're just this master mixer that we weren't aware of ?
Speaker 2Yeah , no , I haven't touched the craft in so long . It's awful , I had no idea . Yeah , man , I went to school for that . I had a lot of big hopes . And the second I got out of school school Owl City was a big thing and the dude did everything in his basement and like studios were dying and I was like , oh cool , I should have went for show production . I reached out to Eric Kratz of Stonewall Pilots . He had a studio in LA . I reached out and tried to get an internship there . They wrote back , which was super nice , but no luck , man . No one's trying to bring anybody in you would have been getting food for a year .
Speaker 1And then at least that's how the studio we went to worked where you have to be a runner essentially for the first year or two , and then you can touch one fader , and then you go back to being a runner , and then you can touch two faders yeah yep , yep , I don't uh whatever , but uh , open hand you and me .
Networking Success and Musical Influences
Speaker 2Okay , 2005 , never heard of it . Uh , I was like again . I was in florida , I drove around all the time listening to this album you and me , and and me without you .

We were a very spoiled band . They had a tour bus . We should not have had a tour bus .
Speaker 2I remember you telling me but we had a tour bus . So all I saw was a tool to use in networking to get us on bigger tours . And so we went out with Secret Lives of the Freemasons the first time , did a full US tour , and we went out with Secret Lives of the Freemasons the first time , did a full US tour , and then went out with the Sleeping and a Day to Remember on the second one , all because we had a bus and I could use it . And it's also the same way . We got on Warped Tour for two weeks . That's your narrative . That was my end . I was like I have this , I'm going to use it , and I did and we did , and that's that . You know , it was fun . We use , I used what I had in front of me , so , um , yeah , we were not that lucky .
Speaker 2Yeah , we did have a van too , though when we were trying to slum it . Okay , okay , at least you experienced the van , yeah , the van was honestly the van was more fun to me cause that was like that was the experience I was looking for .
Speaker 1Slightly less expensive . The gas was a lot less expensive . We learned just how much just a driver cost for a bus .
Speaker 2Well , again spoiled because Colton's dad drove the bus for us . Okay so yeah , that was also good . And take us to casinos and hand us a couple hundred bucks to go gamble . Oh my God , I mean , it was we cheated , we cheated , oh my . God it was . I mean I it was . We cheated , we cheated . Hey , whatever , yeah , but this is the card you're dealt . Bucket list got . I knocked a bunch of stuff off a bunch of stuff off it so .
Speaker 1That's what my dad told me when I , when I pulled out of everything , he's like look something that less than 1% of people might be able to do .

Um , that album front to back , I think , is just so inspired and it , the way they did the , the programming with the guitars and the , the vocals it was , I don't know . I just thought it was all very , it was very well done and I think that's another big one that is going to be up there on the top 10 for sure . Nice Is Alien .
