Influential Albums and Musical Variety

Speaker 2Oh man , especially all five of us in the room . We were a bit chaotic when we're all together .
Speaker 1It's fun , though I don't know man this might sound , we might get into cliche kind of lovey-dovey territory . But I feel like , since we had that session and all of us really got to talk , because we I mean , I don't know if there's a preconceived notion that bands just hang out 24-7 . I think it's actually quite the opposite , oh , 100% opposite . We see each other just at shows , and even then it's like hey man , hey man .
Speaker 2Because the Belding's don't practice . No , we don't practice . Yeah , we show up at play and that's the only time we actually see each other , unless there's like something planned out where you know we're seeing something outside , but it's very rare .
Speaker 1Yeah , absolutely . Everyone's life is you know , I just thought it was great being able to talk to everybody and , like , actually hang out and have a conversation and not saying we don't talk but anyway . Anyway , I'm just saying it was good to talk to everybody .
Speaker 2That's also what we talk about and the dumb stuff that we talk about all the time In sports . Yeah in sports , definitely in sports . I realized after the last two that Evan and I did not state who our top two bands are . I know that's a very loaded question because those can vary between time periods and whatnot , but Evan top periods and whatnot , but Evan top two right now .
Speaker 1Oh man , right now , yeah , I don't know , spotify has spoiled me because I can just throw in a playlist . It's all over the place . It's not like I'm old , but it is nice . I don't know , because , yeah , you remember putting on a CD and listening front to back and you would just be obsessed with that artist . I don't know , man , it's tough because I am either listening to just brutally heavy music or it's like classical movie soundtracks so when I , when I think evan , I usually think gojira yeah , yeah .
Speaker 1So because you're a good one . And , of course , perfect timing , because everyone's like oh yeah , you watch the olympics because you're an opinion about it .
Speaker 1No , no , no . So , like , uh , gojira is great because they I am a fairly recent gojira is great because they I am a fairly recent Gojira fan because I didn't really know them back in the day . I caught on to them when Magma came out and I think that was 2016 or I think it was something like that , so it just hooked me . Love that album . It's so good . And to further solidify that , uh chelsea and I have gone to see gojira every year since we met so yeah , I think every year .
Speaker 1so it's kind of . I I guess that deserves it definitely goes years up there . I just love how heavy , but like simplified , they are not saying mario's stuff is simple , he's a beast of a drummer , but like simplified they are not saying Mario stuff is simple , he's a beast of a drummer , but like there's just this raw energy to it that , um , I really love . With Gojira , so sure we can name Gojira and then man , I , I don't know , um , I think that bring me the Horizon is doing killer stuff . It's funny because every record I don't like it at first , ever since , like you know , probably Sempaternal right , because Sempaternal was like I feel like that was peak , that was like peak Bring Me , like I feel like that was peak , that was like peak .
Speaker 1Bermuda horizon with like that iteration that they they had in the beginning where it's just it was good heavy music . Then they started to kind of do more of the experimental pop stuff and , uh , every record since I've grown to like really love and it's , it's interesting and I feel like that deserves a merit . There , where it's hard to reinvent yourself like that every time and to to have a new direction and concept with each record , but also like retain me as a fan . You know , like with how different it is , but there's still like that heavy heart and soul that's there . Um , I don't know how long it's going to last , but they're a good one . I think they're up there , and that I mean it changes all the time . Like I said and I was telling you earlier , like for me it's like albums , albums at like certain times in my life that like shaped me , you know .
Speaker 1I think that's more so than like a favorite , because artists change you . You grow up like you , you change your taste and everything , and I think , uh , albums you can always look back on . It was that time that you listened to that record and that like sticks with you and those memories pop up . You know , oh yeah , that's definitely that's definitely for a few .
Speaker 2If I go back , like I have all that , like that's that's a whole episode . Yeah , that's definitely . If I go back , I have all that , that's a whole episode in itself . Yeah , that's like Stone Temple , pilots and bands like that . I'm rooted in their albums .
Speaker 1I'd be curious to know your top five or even go ten albums that ping certain moments , Because I definitely I have that list .
Speaker 2There's like the blindside silence album . I know , like that album's on I'm driving in Lubbock , I'm driving back and forth to class in Lubbock , down to South Plains , and like that's , that's the album I had on all the time and so , like when I hear that album , that just takes me right to that spot , which is , I mean , it's a boring area , but yeah , like I , I have a definite feel for that album , where I was and everything but yeah , I have so many of those and I dude .

Speaker 2That's one of our episodes is going down , down , down , my , my brother-in-law . They're all the bands that are super influential to me . But if I'm saying two right now , for me , one has to be Death Cab for Cutie . I love the writing .
Speaker 1That's one of my all time favorites now he's the guy that did Postal Service , right , yeah ?
Speaker 2just the writing of his album , paul . If he was on here , he'd tell you like well , I don't like this album and I don't like this album , but I like all of them . Yeah , they're all so good .
Speaker 1How many are there ?
Speaker 2Because I'm totally blind with Death Cab . There's like I think it's like eight or nine , Wow , or like I mean they have like early ones . Like Cordy bought me the um , the early box set stuff and vinyl , Um , and there was a lot of them , cause they had a lot of older albums too .
Speaker 2Um , I would say most people probably just know that one right oh I mean like plans is like your main one , you know , and then um , but they're so good . There's the . The writing is so good , the music is so good , rhythm , everything about it Is that the one with uh uh ? There's a fireflies , or uh , oh , dude you're thinking of . Uh , no , you're thinking of that electric , the dude that did all this stuff in the basement .
Speaker 1Oh no , no city . Not Owl City , not Owl City . Follow you Into the Dark . Is Death Cab right ?
Speaker 2Oh , yes , Me and my wife had that at our wedding and when she was walking down the aisle it was all instrumental Death Cab the entire thing . It was funny because we're cousins , we didn't know each other super well , but they were like this is all Death Cab stuff . So they came to me and talked to me at the reception .
Speaker 1Was it arranged differently ? You couldn't tell right off the bat .
Speaker 2Oh yeah , it was all strings , all string , Death Cab . It was great . So that's definitely one . And my number two is going to surprise most , I think , and you can tell how different all of our answers are . But Paramore is . I love Paramore so much . What album ? Uh , I mean go from the very first one .
Speaker 1You know like go like .
Speaker 2Very first , the very first , okay , because , like that's when they they entered the scene at the time and I thought that album was killer , yeah , but then like go go , what's the most current one ? This is why this is why it's the most current one that album is killer . I don't think I've heard you that album is killer front to back . That album is so good and it's so different from the first one . So I feel like you get a wide variety with them , but they're so good man .

Speaker 1I probably told you this , like when I , when I was working on it I don't know if I brought it up , but um , yeah , I mean I was . I was just trying to find the right Haley for it and I just it's hard man , she's nothing popped up and then I saw , uh , tiffany put it , put one together . She , uh I ran sound for her when she uh was doing Toxic the Britney Spears experience , okay . So I was like damn it , she beat me , she , she got a van together and they're playing Porsche , actually , and we're playing the same night .
Speaker 2If you can pull it off , man , that's a killer .

Speaker 1So Josh . Okay , so it was two brothers , josh and Zach Farrow , right ? Josh Farrow , Zach Farrow , and then the bass player forgot his name and then Haley , right . So I have that connection with them from the record experience , because we had the same producer who did Riot , and it might've been just Riot . What's the one after that Brick ? Brand New Eyes . That's it , brand New Eyes . I don't know if David Bendeth did that one , but we did our record with David Bendeth in 2013 . He did Paramore . That was 2007 , 2006 for Riot .
Speaker 2Yeah , the early one . I think 2004 was the first one , First album .
Speaker 1Yeah , I think Riot was 06 or 07 . So we recorded in the same place and it was really cool because there was like this uh , cubby area where , um , it said , like hayley was here oh , that's so cool like , uh , they did that record when they were teenagers , dude , like at least the first one for sure .
Speaker 1I don't know how old they were with Riot , but Josh wrote . I know Josh wrote a lot of that music and you can hear that style with all that music when Josh was in the band . When Josh left , you could tell it kind of like switched into producer music , if that makes sense , and I'd say it's bad . It's incredibly good , like with Ain't it fun ? And like all that stuff . If I'm so good . Um , I remember reading an article I think it was all press where they were like talking about how there was all this beef because josh , uh , josh , wrote everything .
Speaker 2But then they were the record label wanted to make hayley like the next gwen stefani oh yeah , they wanted to sign just her , and she said she wouldn't sign without her baby , right , right .
Speaker 1You probably know more of that history too , but I just thought it was interesting , because Josh left and I kind of I don't know they were dating . Were they confirmed dating ? I thought they were Okay .
Speaker 2And like they broke up and then he left . Then she dated the dude from Newfound Glory , right , right , and now she's dating the current guitarist . Oh no , yeah , she's dating the current guitarist , which he's been around for a while .
Music Industry Ticket Prices
Speaker 2But their current configuration , which is like they just promote them three , yeah , but Zach the drummer killer .
Speaker 1He's killer dude . He was the youngest , he was 14 . In the band , yeah , yeah .
Speaker 2And youngest , he was 14 in the band , yeah , and dude plays like a monster . Like he hits so hard , his rhythms are so different like they're really hard , you can't really mimic him .
Speaker 1We , um , I'm I'm not , I'm trying not to go like too into it , but like we got to uh hear the actual snare that they used for riot , he's like , oh yeah , you want to hear it . Well , I gotta talk like david bennett , yeah , you want to , you want to hear the snare . So he , we , he pulled it out . I think it was a vinnie paul snare that they used on that record . I'm not positive , but uh , it was . It was pretty cool , man , I got to hear the snare in person and there were some samples that the engineers had that we're listening to and just those drums , dude , those drums are so good on that record .
Speaker 2You know , what's funny is , uh , I did a uh very small project after blair was over yeah , it's called spanish for valerie and um , I went to baltimore to to mix it and the guy that was mixing there did four years strong and he was like he was like I have the drum samples for paramore and he he actually plugged them all into our , to our ep that we made , so like all the the drum samples for Paramore , and he actually plugged them all into our EP that we made , so like all the drum samples are plugged in there . And I was like , yeah , man , I'm down Samples being passed around .
Speaker 1I mean , I love that , and we were the engineers that we had .
Speaker 2they were kind of open to be like oh yeah , dude , you want some samples , you want to hear them Like they were just so pumped on like , yeah , just sharing the craft , showing your live their library to you , exactly , and uh , it's good times , man for sure , but paramore's killer paramore is killer man and uh , by the way , um , we had to , we had to record this out in kind of like the hallway because a lot of people were practicing . So if you're hearing sounds in the background like drums or snares or clicks or anything like that that we go in the room and we're just like it's kind of quiet .
Speaker 1You know you hear guys outside the hall , you know talking it's cool , whatever , like everyone's got their own room and we just hear like wah , like okay , we're going to have to move , yeah , so we had to walk around the complex to find the quietest area and we found this nice oval table with some nice chairs . Right outside Dwayne's office . So thank you , dwayne , for the quiet area up here . Don't let anyone up here , appreciate you . Yeah , man , speaking of Paramore concert tickets lately .
Speaker 2Yeah , man . So when Paramore came around , I looked at tickets and I think it was like $180 , $190 . Which is cool , because I know that they played at Dickies and I'm pretty sure it sold out .
Speaker 1And so that's awesome .
Speaker 2for that , it's awesome for bands to be making that , though , but wanting to take my kids , that's rough .
Speaker 1Like wanting to take my kids , like that's rough . It's like how far away from the purpose are we ? You know what I mean ? Like where you're that much on tickets , dude , yeah .
Speaker 2I mean , look at what Taylor Swift did with her tickets . I mean she , I mean , and people were down to pay , and that's again , that's awesome .
Speaker 1It wasn't like a billion dollars the last year or something , mean she , I mean , and people were down to pay and that's again . That's awesome , Wasn't like a billion dollars the last , or something .
Speaker 2Yeah , she insane . Like my wife went . She loved it Like she wouldn't . She didn't regret it for a minute , you know . And like she like was happy with every penny she spent for it and she's very money conscious with stuff like that . Yeah , but you have Benson Boone . Uh , come into town and and October and my daughter , like my five-year-old daughter , loves Benson Boone and I was like super pumped because he's new and I was like you know what ? Look at tickets and see how much they cost and the tickets were $180 and for a ticket . And so it's like , man , you know , I took my son to Panic at the Disco when they were here . I remember that and that wasn't too bad . I mean , that was probably like 90 bucks a ticket . You know something ?

Speaker 2I mean , I'm down to pay that Me and my wife and my son went . But I'm going to have to look for other tickets . See if the lawn seats are where they're sitting
Artists and Social Media Influence

Speaker 1Now we went to Music Factory because I think we got free tickets to see Brad Paisley . Oh yeah , and I don't listen to country , I have a respect for it . It's the best production value on the planet . It is literally a factory of music , country music . So anyway , I didn't know that the guy could shred dude oh my God .
Speaker 1So we got free tickets and they were lawn tickets at the music factory . So I'm like , okay , it's on the lawn , we're not going to be able to see anything . No , dude , they have it right there . Giant screens , the mix , yeah .
Speaker 2Yeah , that's where Benson Moons played .
Speaker 1The mix out there was incredible . I was blown away at the quality of being out in the cheap sheet , the cheap seats , cheap sheets , um . But yeah , dude , I was like blown away by that show , cause I was expecting it to just be a bunch of yee haw And-haw . This is when I recently came in from California to Texas , so I was like okay .
Speaker 2So you had the stereotypical mindset of Texas , like you're running where all the cattle were and tumbleweeds and whatnot .
Speaker 1Yeah right , everyone's wearing boots , but no , it was a good concert dude . His music was great , he shredded it and he had like South Park snippets in his show , where they actually put Brad Paisley in like , uh , south Park skits .

Speaker 1I was , uh , I was pumped on it , it was a good show but uh , that was at the music factory , and uh , I still haven't been there yet .
Speaker 2Dude , it was . It was nice . I was like I was hoping to go and it is new . It . Okay , I apologize if I'm speaking really low . I've been under the weather this week . You're good , you're sounding nice and sensual . I'm just a real Barry Manilow in here , or Barry White , whichever one speaks lower .
Speaker 1Yeah , sweet , sweet baby , but it's a good venue . Man , you'll have a good time there . Same thing with tickets where we just bought tickets for Gojira . It's like anytime they're here , we try and go and it doesn't matter who they're with , and this year it's actually with Korn and Spiritbox .

Speaker 1So Spiritbox is opening , then it's Gojira and Korn , so it's like hell yeah .
Speaker 2Yeah , I remember I went to Korn one time when I was little and they brought the world's largest sound system at the time , like Guinness record sound system . Really , Fieldy hit that bass man . You felt every bit of it . In your soul , in your soul , your soul , came out for a second and then came back in .
Speaker 1Every time he slaps those floppy-ass strings . Every time , man , that was probably $120 , $130 . That was probably $120 , $130 , but I think PayPal lets you split purchases like that .

It's a big room , I've never been there and it's like a hangar where like yeah , it's very long . But uh , when gajira played there I mean , because you're not a small band , they're huge and um , we got in and it was like there are people there , but they're .
Speaker 1The barricades were like right up to the stage and the stage is only probably four feet yeah Like four feet tall , so like we were 10 feet away , 50 feet away from Joe , like right there , Just it was killer dude , did you see that ?
Speaker 2um , on the Olympics they were talking about like it was the , the singers , that is yeah .
Speaker 1Joe , it was the singer . Yeah , joe , joe , kay .
Speaker 2So he was saying that they pretty much gave them the composition for what they were supposed to do , but they didn't really rehearse anything with anybody . They didn't know Lady Gaga was there , they didn't know . Was it Celine Dion ? I ?
Speaker 1don't know . I know Lady Gaga was there .
Speaker 2They had no idea who all was there , they just literally knew to go up and play . So they had to keep it pretty secret , yeah , and they had to play to that piece of music that they had . They didn't have a set thing to play , but they were just like do your thing to this tempo and to this . You know scale or whatever .
Speaker 1As someone would say that doesn't understand metal music or whatever they're trying to do Go up . You're a French icon .
Speaker 2Yeah , so get up there and show everyone what you got .

Speaker 1Oh yeah , the satanic Olympics . But all that aside , the fact that they had Gajira play , that was cool as hell . That's so cool .
Speaker 2I don't like all the and I won't get into it too often or too much , but everyone gets so up in arms about everything . Now the second something happens . Someone's like let me get on my social media and let me . Let's start boycotting this . And it's like man , like at one point , like just let stuff be , like it's not worth the headache to actually get into it that much and care about it . Just blame twitter , twitter , twitter twitter .
Speaker 2For every twitter's awful , I gotta figure out how to um , I gotta figure out how to filter stuff on twitter . I see fights all the time and I'm like I've never seen so many people knocked out in my life I , I , I've never been it's .
Speaker 1It's hilarious dude , because I , I was verified on twitter for a while because we had a fan that worked at Twitter back in the day and got us verified . I was like , okay , cool , I didn't even use Twitter , I got the checkmark . Then , of course , checkmarks went away and I never really used Twitter . Recently I've been looking at it more , just because it's just political stuff and I feel like I need to somewhat track track .
Speaker 1I don't know if that's the best place to do it , but what I like about it is I I feel like I'm a pretty neutral guy and , um , you know , trying to just soak up everything that I can , you know , from different perspectives and everything . And , um , I know Twitter is considered , you know , very , very right and like that , or x yeah , or x , whatever you want to call it .
Speaker 1um , there's like this like fact check thing . At the bottom , though , there's a thing was really cool they did , where , if something's posted , that's like it's insanely false or like something like that , it'll say oh , by the way , all the comments here say this is not true and it's like not regulated by like an entity within Twitter . X , I think it's based on like the people using it .
Speaker 2Yeah , like the comments , so I thought that was kind of cool , but yeah , some people , some people take that stuff to like that's Bible , like that's like . No , I saw it . It says it on here , don't ?
Speaker 1trust anything Trust your friends , trust your family . Do your research . Trust your friends , trust your family , do your research . Anything on the internet is garbage .

Speaker 1Circling back to what we do every weekend , or what we try to do every weekend and play these shows . It's kind of that big escape because with I mean everyone's worried about AI and all this stuff where people are losing their jobs or the .
Speaker 1You know we're going to lose the authenticity of art and like all that stuff and you know they took our jobs and shame on us Right Cause we're we're playing other people's music , but like the thing we get to do every weekend , playing for everybody where it is physical , we're all there , we're all experiencing that moment together . You know , like it it's that I'm like , technology will never take it . It can never be this you know , and that's what's so cool , is that ?
Speaker 2no matter what , we don't use tracks .

Speaker 2And not saying that the tracks are bad or all tracks are bad or whatever that we just we're not built for that .

Speaker 1I mean , there's even that argument with uh like even djs , where people will say you know , well , it's a track , and like there's still energy , like everyone's feeling the same beat and they're all the one drop button . You remember that uh , andy sandberg skit ? Do you remember that skit ? Oh , my god , dude , he's like he's playing a dj and uh , he's like , he's like into it , he's rocking . And uh , he DJ and he's into it , he's rocking .
Speaker 2He goes to touch . I never talk about that . He's like cooking eggs . Yeah , he's like almost there .
Speaker 1Almost there . It's so funny , dude , that guy kills me Brooklyn Nine-Nine , all day long . Do you watch that show ?
Speaker 2Oh man , a few of them , not a lot of them . It's probably something I could get into , but once I got married it was like you know , courtney and I have completely different tastes and stuff . So stuff like that that I watch . I watch usually when she goes to bed . I'll start a series when she goes to bed , or something like that . I have my beat headphones on . What does she watch ? Sorry , courtney , um sorry courtney . Uh , courtney loves reality tv , okay , and so she's super . We all do to a certain degree .
Speaker 2She's super into like she's got her shows that she watches um , and her and I have shows together that we watch that are actual , like you know how , how deep in reality tv oh , man , are we , are we talking housewives ?
Speaker 1and okay , but not like she's , not like milf , manor , or like no , no , no , no , no , no , no , love Islander , she has her limits .
Speaker 2She usually sticks to the what is it ? Kardashians and Real Housewives Are they still going ?
Speaker 1Yeah , they're on Hulu now . Oh my gosh .
Speaker 2Yeah , they're still just going making money , good for them , yeah , you know Living their best life , they know what to do .
Speaker 1You know they , they , they're they know what to do .

Speaker 1They have something , they're doing it , and they're making money doing it .
Speaker 1It's like , I guess , let them live man , yeah , um , no , I mean I , I don't know . I , chelsea and I are messed up . We love watching like , like . We love watching like , like , uh , I don't know just compilations of different fails and like cop videos are intoxicating for us . I don't know what it is Like the chase and the I don't know Like .
Speaker 1I think there's this fascination with like , like the judicial system and like how society works . I don't know the judicial system and like how society works . I don't know . It's kind of fascinating like looking at like court videos and like how the law worked here but didn't work here you know what I mean Like how different situations and come into play and like , uh , you watch enough of it where you can kind of know the language of like okay , the cop wasn't supposed to say this , the cop wasn't supposed to say this and that person wasn't supposed to say this , but they did and like you know it's just how I was , like the ones where , like , the people actually know what they're talking about and the officer's like just trying to like bully it , and I have officer friends , so , yeah , I'm not like rooting against , like the cops .
Speaker 2But I do like that . You can't do that to them .
Speaker 1It's kind of incredible how much of a like I don't know . It's kind of like a gotcha thing , unless you know what you're talking about , and then it's like , oh crap , we actually have to like think about what we're saying here , you know , and it does turn into kind of a game , you know where it's like okay , well , these words actually mean this and and this means this and I have to be careful how I say this and it's a whole game , man , the way that it works . It's interesting . But we love that reality TV side of it , I guess , and we like house stuff .

I do that if I eat Halloween dude .
Speaker 1If I eat Halloween , I'll wake up at 3 in the morning with Harper . Oh yeah , that sucks , but anyway , dude , house stuff's great . It's great and it's bad , because you just get pumped watching it . Oh , you're like , I'm going to do that , I'm going to do that I'm going to , babe , we're going to paint this room , we're going to do all this and have all these ideas . Then you get bummed out because you're like , oh wait , we can .
Speaker 1Then you start adding the money together and you're like man , that's actually like $400 for me just to clean this wall off and paint it . We need to get better about it , dude . It's been two years now that we live in that house and we've made some improvements , but we haven't like made any like big aesthetic improvements like carpet , and we still have like stained carpet to hell and back .
Speaker 2Oh man , yeah , it's like there's always like deals going around with like carpeting .
Speaker 1I know we just needed to pull the trigger and do it . But yeah , the reality shows , house shows , chels loves Trixie Patel I think it's the name , trixie Patel , the drag queen , oh , I don't know . Does Courtney watch RuPaul or anything like that ? Okay , chels loves that stuff . So , and I don't mind it , I think you can get kind of catty , obviously , yeah , but like , I actually kind of enjoy watching trixie stuff and um , we watched a thing called trixie motel and trixie uh bought this motel and like redid it and like there's all these different themes , all the rooms . Of course it's all very flamboyant , yeah , but uh , some stuff is really cool , like the way that you get creative with like how houses don't have to be just like four walls . You know what I mean . Like you can , you know what , if you have like a curved corner or , like you know , do shapes instead of just a line of paint , you know like doing that kind of stuff . But you should watch .

I remember watching because it's all subtitles and I'm like , okay , I need to actually pay attention to this .
Speaker 2You know you get to be in the mood to watch a movie like that where you can't just put on Family Guy and like no , you got to read , yeah , you're reading . You can't put a phone down , so I got to do that . I know a lot of movies deserve attention , but it's man . I could talk about movies for like five , six episodes Easy .
