Speaker 5All right , I want to tackle a topic . All right . Is there a funniest moment from one of our shows that you can pull off , like , just pull out of the blue . Funniest moment Like a funny or ridiculous moment , oh man , because I got ridiculous I have . Or ridiculous moment because I got ridiculous I .
Speaker 2I have a ridiculous moment , but it's yours . Yeah , it's not as ridiculous , but it was fun seeing aaron just get this posse backing you up at poor shack that one night , oh , during like post-covid . Okay , so it was that lady who came up and grabbed your mic yeah , and started trying to try and sing and like talk . And I grabbed and said who are you ?
Speaker 5I was like we're literally like just coming out of a pandemic or still in one technically , and you're grabbing my microphone and you're getting like germs on it . I have to go home to my kids not knowing where you are from and what you've been doing and who you've been around .
Speaker 2Everyone's like clapping and cheering because you're saying this in the mic .
Speaker 5I was like you're extremely inconsiderate and you don't care about anyone but yourself and having a good time on your own . That's it .
Speaker 3The mic grabbing has happened a few times over the years . It's incredible the people who think that we're dancing puppets on stage and that they can do what they want .
Speaker 5It's always like someone comes to me and goes .
Speaker 2I'm really good at singing the toadies , if you're listening to this and you feel super confident when you go to the bar next time and you want to go up there and grab that mic .
Speaker 5Don't grab mics from people that are up there trying to .
Speaker 3Imagine going into a Subway and being like I'm so fucking good at making sandwiches , you gotta get the other way .

Speaker 5Evan is right , though , whenever that one lady stole the mic and you went off on like I have kids and the whole crowd was like oh yeah , and then she sat down and she was fuming and all her friends were just like they were embarrassed , they were like I don't know what to do and they all left and people were clapping as they walked out . Yeah , it was not our finest moment Fun times I don't have too many of those , but those were two of them and they both came out , you keep telling me the story about people fighting during Blink-182 songs .
Speaker 2Oh yeah , that used to happen all the time .
Speaker 3I remember going to shows . I remember going to see y'all and I'm so bad at this , my memory is atrocious but 7th Street , like Bro , bar y'all played a couple acoustic shows .
Speaker 4That was the poor house that was no no , no , it was not the poor house it was the floor show it starts with the oh Reservoir
Speaker 3yeah , reservoir yeah , you guys did like a couple of full band shows , floor shows , shows in the middle . I don't want to rip on the bar because it's a bar , it's whatever .
Speaker 5They weren't set up for that .
Speaker 3It was kind of half restaurant , half trying to get a bar show going on .
Speaker 4It was like tables in places and things like that .
Speaker 3It was logistically not set correctly .
Speaker 5Yeah , that was not set for those .
Speaker 3I can't remember if you guys were playing an acoustic show one night , but you guys were playing an acoustic show one night , but you guys were playing Blink-182 songs and dudes just started knocking over tables and just dog-walking each other .
Speaker 4That was a live show . I remember that . Okay , I do remember that that was a live show . Yeah , that's awesome , that guy got choked out . The security guard choked him out , the one that happened at the the uh , the poor house on seventh . Like it literally we were playing , damn it and literally started out . We stopped and it like went through the bar and then went into the parking lot . It like fucking traveled . Yeah , it like went out . It kept on fucking going . It was always Blink-182 .
Speaker 3And it was like yeah , it's just Blink-182 . There's nothing like hearing a song from 1998 about how hard it is to be a Southern California high school student and wanting to just rock a guy rock another 31-year-old man in a bar , I think it was the Eagle's .
Speaker 4Nest , where there was two girls pulling each other up by the hair's Nest . The song's about sexual angst . Two girls With those girls like pulling each other up by the hair like this .
Speaker 5Yeah , yeah , the Eagle's Nest , the Eagle's Nest two girls , I mean the girl fights are brutal . Yeah , they are and they were just like . I mean we stopped . We're like whoa , whoa , whoa , like chill out , chill out . That happened a couple of times at the of link tune , but the original magnolia motor lounge and , like you'd look up and all of a sudden a table is not up anymore .
Speaker 3It's like flying or falling or whatever . Who is it ? Your , your brother ? Your brother get punched . Your brother , my brother got cold cocked like a cheap shot because I don't know if two dudes were fighting or what . Oh no , I think a guy was drunk . Security was trying to kick him out . Oh yeah , that's what it was . A guy was smoking cigarettes in the place , shit-faced , and my brother was like , hey , they're asking you to leave , dude , all you got to do is leave . And the guy just like , just right in the jaw , just cocked him .
Speaker 5And his brother's the law .
Speaker 3So the fun fact about hitting someone , that's like trained to hit people . You normally don't continue to hit people for very long .
Speaker 1No , Not to interrupt anybody . Sorry , I'm watching TV right now .
Speaker 3But I've been thinking about it , my favorite .
Speaker 1I think my most ridiculous moment is we were playing the Wild Rooster . It was like in collaboration or in conjunction with the Roller Derby Girls . I remember that one .
Speaker 3Really ? Oh my God , I forgot about that .
Speaker 1We played our set , we took a break during the break they went off and did their . I think it was like the year end and so they're like handing out awards and I didn't know what was going on in there .
Speaker 1I was outside like smoking a cigarette or something , and I come back in and apparently after they were handing out awards , they were also doing leg wrestling so I just remember like going back to the stage to play Leg wrestling and I see this commotion is going on and everyone's yelling and this one girl just pops up and her nose is just gushing blood and she's like come at me , bitch .
Speaker 5Nobody knows Gigi now , Amazing those Dallas Derby Devils man .
Speaker 4Dallas Derby Devils . I fucking forgot about that , damn .
Speaker 5Yeah that was , that was intense .
Band Stories and Inside Jokes
Speaker 3All of my memories of like Outlandish things that happen at shows . Or we get off stage and either Aaron or Ben had to like hey man , we need to talk . You can't say things like that on the microphone anymore . So it's not like it was a good show or a bad show or something crazy happened . It would just be like Ben like hey man , you can't make 311 , 911 jokes anymore . Oh yeah , it was like 200 people here . It's not a good look for us . You can't say those things .
Speaker 5I mean I get that . Once Ben left , the band Matt was released again .
Speaker 3I hate dead air man . I try to think about it in terms of if you go to a concert and you watch a band any band , local , national , whatever and there's a 45-second gap every so many songs where they're just looking around , it's rough , around , rough . Hey guys , what should we do next ? Like I don't like that . I think it's a bad show . So I try to eliminate that by using a microphone and after a while it became a game . We're like what can I say that will miss the rest of the band up . Like , if I make Michael laugh , will the tempo get fucked up , which never happens . The man's a clock . So that game got old once . I became a failure at that game and it became a I don't know . Sorry , the radio's talking over there .

Speaker 3What can I say that gets me in trouble .
Speaker 5Yeah , yeah , no , there's when we played , when we used to do the R&B stuff you would get me during R&B stuff .
Speaker 3Well yeah , because there's no guitar parts in some of those tunes Very soft .
Speaker 5So I hear everything , but it was like during , I think , Nice and Slow by Usher .
Speaker 3Yeah , because there's only so many . Like damn girl , you can hit .
Speaker 5No condom and after a while it was like that was a huge one where Mads goes no condom .
Speaker 3Did your sister say anything about me ? Yeah , I'm going to lay you down right here In the Whataburger parking lot at 3.15 am .
Speaker 5But I think people started liking the R&B stuff because of the stuff he would say , because I'd watch people just watching Matt the entire time If there was a version of Boyz II Men that was just filthy , filthy , nasty .
Speaker 3Not filthy nasty but low rent , filthy nasty Like damn baby . Once my roommates go to sleep and by roommates I mean my brother I'm going to dick you down ?
Speaker 2I mean I'm down to learn those songs . You guys stopped doing them because I joined .
Speaker 5No , it wasn't that . I think we stopped doing it just because it was like You're white .
Speaker 2Ben was not .
Speaker 5Ben was famously not a white guy . Ben brought all of the R&B to us . He was all the swagger for our band . I've been meaning to talk to you guys about how white this band is . Oh , I thought Corey Seager was good . Yeah , he had the look , but no , it definitely went foul ball yard . No , we stopped doing it just because we wanted to stick more with the rock element . Yeah , that was , I think , what we brought to people better than did you do ?
Speaker 2there was a little more variety back in the day yeah .
Speaker 1I think that's going over the fence . Did you get it ? We used to do shoot with Brittany . I would do shoot okay .
Speaker 3I thought about trying to get y'all to do , shoot with me , just to like change the dynamic in the wrong way , just because , like I know , brittany would go up there and like here I go , here I go , here I go , and then me would be like girls , what's my weakness , man ? And just to you know I don't want to do that anymore , so that's fine .
Speaker 5It's been nine years since I thought about that . I wanted to at one point just stick more with the rock element of it , because I thought we did that really well .
Speaker 2I thought you guys touched on country a little bit .
Speaker 1That has been done a little bit we did .
Speaker 3Garth Garth Brooks Friends in Love Place , just because it was bar heavy , it was such a bar heavy song . Yeah , that song's a walk-in , for sure .
Speaker 5Yeah , assuming you remember the song , I stopped and sang to that song , so yeah .

Speaker 3It's not that it's a hard solo , it's just that I didn't practice or remember it .
Speaker 2You always say Creep . I feel like Creep is not a hard solo . We're always like are we playing Creep tonight ? It's not that it's hard .
Speaker 3It's that it's super specific , yeah , and so there's no room for improv on it so like generally speaking , something's in like position two pentatonic minor Gee .
Speaker 2It's one of those things where people know it Like they know what it's supposed to sound like .
Speaker 3You can't just like rip into , like blues licks or whatever . Like the album and we play it maybe three times a year and uh , inside baseball I do not like radio head .
Speaker 3I'm not trying to rip on them or anybody that enjoys them , they just don't do anything for me they don't check that box and so I don't practice that , I don't go over it , I don't listen to it . So when we're in the middle of a set and we haven't played it in like six months and it's like , all right , guys , let's play creep , I'm like okay , I know everything but the solo , because it's three chords for me other than the solo Three chords .
Speaker 2I think people enjoy it .
Speaker 3No , it's not that it's a bad tune .
Speaker 2I just like it's . I don't want to listen to it ever it's so hit or miss man , and it depends on the crowd .
Speaker 5Paul , what you got ? Oh , it's a home run .
Speaker 3I thought it was Ezekiel Duran , because it says Duran , like there's no way , ezekiel Duran , he's good at baseball , but he's not like an all-star player , you know .
Speaker 4Oh man , I can't fucking know . Half these stories , y'all bring it up . I totally forgot . So I'm sure there's something else . Yeah , that's why I don't remember any outrageous stories that happened because it's normally like gee , there's so many more beers left . Paul's usually wandering A lot of the time I was barely there .

Speaker 3It's crazy to me how you guys are like hey guys , come over to the house .
Speaker 2I want to know why Paul has banned well , not Paul banned Paul band but why you refuse to play Mr Brightside now , because it fucking sucks . Did you have a bad moment ?
Speaker 4I'd have like a Tom Morello fucking strap . I literally had a separate strap that I would put on every time and it hiked my guitar up here because my pinky won't go that fucking far .
Speaker 3The chord structure of that song is oddly uncomfortable . I remember having to learn all the synth parts on guitar .
Speaker 5We went through a period of like year 10 where we were like , yeah , we called it the college year . Yeah , can we just play like something else for a minute ? So we each picked like a song from like early 2000s and played it and then I picked Float On .
Speaker 3Yeah , I remember we played that for TCU one time because I kept playing that lead part and I was like this is fucked off and I eventually had to quit playing because it sounded so bad and I thought I was off . And it turns out Paul was a half a step flat and I was not playing a half a step flat .

Speaker 3Oddly enough . Well , no , so that happens . No , I'm not trying to rip into you because that day was crazy . It's funny you say this , matt , no , no , because I remember thinking it was my fault . So what happened that day was crazy too . So we're playing TCU football game , college game day Saturday . There's like what , 80,000 , 90,000 people there . I think college game day might have been there . I don't know if it was uh , week one , week three was early in the season early season we get there for load and they do not let us pull our vehicles up to the stage .
Speaker 3There's like a set , there's a parking , you park there , you bring your vehicle in . Turns out that parking was like three quarters of a mile away and none of us are using direct rigs .
Speaker 3So it's head cab , pedal board , two guitars analog yeah , so we're doing three trips each three quarters of a mile , carrying respectively , like your rig , my rig , his rig , whatever you're talking about , everybody's probably bringing two to three hundred pounds worth of shit , especially me . Yeah , we , we run a before the the game . I think it might have been a two setter . I feel like there was a break . It was like early in the day , and then right , walk up a stadium , game day , let's rip , and then we do that show , and then we immediately pack up our shit .
Speaker 5Weakest PA ever , by the way . Sorry , it was the weakest PA , yeah , it was super underpowered .
Speaker 3So generally speaking , when schools , when institutions hire a band , they don't know logistically what goes into it and they always underdo it . They try to cut corners . They got a guy , the janitor , whatever , we know a guy . Yeah , so we do that gig and then we immediately pack up all of our shit and drive over to Magnolia Motor Lounge where we have another four hour show . We ended up being on stage like seven hours in one day and so we were super taxed , sun blasted , day drunk , whatever . Yeah , the main thing I remember about that entire day was I remember being behind Michael on University , we're headed over to Magnolia and I just remember I'd shuffle on my phone because I have poverty Spotify so I can't pick a song and Hook comes on by Blues Traveler and I've had enough day beers where I'm like this is the greatest song .
Speaker 5I have ever heard .
Speaker 3And so for like 35 minutes straight sitting in game day traffic .
Speaker 4I'm listening to hook over and over and over , also for the fucking record . I never said I was good at playing guitar , okay , I never fucking said that okay , well , obviously . I've also displayed that .
Speaker 5It's funny , I wasn't trying to rip into you we had seven hours worth of gigs in one day .

Speaker 3I got so drunk at multiple shows in a row that Paul told me I'm not allowed to drink anymore and I quit drinking for a year , out of pure spite .

Speaker 3I've never told anyone this . I was sober like Catholic style . Oh that man was real sober Like doctor sober for a year out of spite hoping the entire time I was like the second . Anyone drinks too much in a show . I'm going to be the biggest asshole on earth .

Speaker 3I got married and my wife was like you want a margarita ? I'm like , yeah , that sounds great . And then we immediately went to Denmark , where people drink all day . And you get there and you're like well , I guess I'm going to drink all day , all this , this rules . And then I got home and you're like , like this isn't over . You know , you get over work like today sucked and then you know , you know , you're back in the loop . That's how that works .

Speaker 1That show or the Graham show , that was one of the ones I was going to bring up , so I don't know .
Speaker 3Y'all weren't there on the Graham show . Y'all can tell the story of the Graham show after this , but everything was wrong with the Graham show . Graham , texas , is roughly I at the time lived in Weatherford Texas , so I don't know where people are listening to this from but Graham is roughly an hour and 45 to two hours west of where I lived . You guys were living in Fort Worth , so add 30 minutes to that . We play a show , maybe not the best show , maybe not the most interested crowd , whatever . We knew some people there and they were hey , come to this house party . And paul . Paul and I were like we don't want to go to a house party but we've had a couple of beers . It's like a two-hour drive home . It's the middle of fucking nowhere . I can , we like go to this house party and maybe sleep in a bed or like I'll sleep on your floor , I just don't need to drive . All two are the single ones at the time , yeah , I'm exhausted , yeah , and neither of us were married at the time .
Speaker 3So paul and I go to this party like we're not looking to party , we're looking to rest . And then we get there and there's like 85 people in a house and it's just banging loud and she's like the , the person I don't I don't want to name anybody like the person's like hey , here's the room , nobody's in here , crash out . And then I don't even remember what happened . I think she closed the door and you and I looked at each other and then we kissed a little bit and then sorry , no , uh , we made a pact , yeah we'd never tell anybody unless it was , unless it anybody unless it was recorded .
Speaker 3No , you and I looked at each other and you were like it's so fucking loud in here , dude , I want to go home . So bad . I was like dude , I live in Weatherford , It'll save you 45 minutes if you just sleep on my couch . Let's just go home . And that was at maybe 3 am when we made that decision .
Speaker 5You must be lonely . Ben and I were already at home and on beds . I remember the entire drive home .
Speaker 3All I did was listen to the same Bad Religion album on repeat and I had to turn it up so loud it hurt because I knew the second . I was comfortable , I was going to go to sleep . I was sober , I was just exhausted . Go to sleep , I was sober , I was just exhausted .

Speaker 3This is 3 am . Yeah , we weren't drunk , it was just fucking great , yeah , I remember being behind the wheel of my car pulling nose hairs out to try to wake myself up .

Speaker 3And then we got back to my house and you slept on my couch . It was funny .
