Speaker 3You were at a show with paul we were yeah , we were at the spasmatic show downtown fort worth and paul and I were on the patio and I think we're just like man , like look at , like look what they're doing , like , yeah , 80s music , people are here freaking out about it . I was like , well , we should do 90s music , that'd be more fun .
Speaker 2And Ben was there . Ben was with us . Did you guys play together before then ?
Speaker 1No .
Speaker 2Like in bands at all .
Speaker 1Paul and Ben had played together right .
Band Formation and Early Shows
Speaker 4In high school I played drums for a high school punk rock band and Ben Dunlap played guitar Really . And we drums for a high school punk rock band and Ben Dunlap played guitar really and we rolled . We basically just took Blink-182 songs and changed the lyrics just made it .
Speaker 2Everybody think okay , you know , I mean typical , but yeah , so I'm yeah .
Speaker 4No , I I knew Ben like in high school , so I I knew him when we were like 15 or 16 . Okay , so . So , but yeah , no , I hadn't played music with any of these guys previously .
Speaker 3And then I met you through Ryan and Brittany , I'm guessing .
Speaker 4I believe so yeah .
Speaker 3Yeah . We were just all hanging out one night , like going out , like we all we did at the time no one was playing music anymore .
Speaker 2How old were you all at that time ?
Speaker 3I mean , this is what 14 years ago ? So I am , I was 27 .
Speaker 5Yeah , I think I was close to 27 .
Speaker 3Wow , yeah , and then , like I knew Michael , I had a roommate named Jenna and she worked with Rachel , michael's wife , and so I knew Michael through that and I think , michael , you're probably the only drummer I knew and I was like I know a drummer I'm going to call , I'm going to ask him the drummer . And at the time , michael and I , we had seen each other , we'd hung out , whatever like that , but it wasn't like I think I had to get your number maybe .
Speaker 1I think I hit you up on Facebook . I remember you saying something about wanting to put something together as their drummer and Rachel saw it and was like hey , do you want to do this ?
Speaker 3You were like I got to bring the drums back out , and then we practiced in Jenna's living room for the first time .
Speaker 2Okay .
Speaker 3And then we got Adam on board . I know he was itching to play . He hadn't played in a while and I think Adam was in for a year and a half .
Speaker 4I think so . Yeah , I think it was in a year .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 2Where was your first show ? Spencer's Corner .
Speaker 3It was that . Oh man , If you're listening to this and you know Spencer's Corner , you know Spencer's Corner . Where was it ?
Speaker 2It was Ridgemar Mall , like by Ridgemar Mall . I think Kevin was telling me about this . Everyone's got stories about this they were going to bring it back .
Speaker 4Yeah , it was a two-story spot . I believe they ran promotions such as $2 . Hurricanes $0.25 whiskey Cokes . Oh yes , it was $0.25 whiskey Cokes .
Speaker 2Okay .
Speaker 3You ain't walking out of that place unless you have a DD .
Speaker 2From what he told me , it was like a stellar venue , though the way the setup was .
Speaker 3I had a blast every time we were there . I think every time we played there . It was fun . It was never dull .
Speaker 4There was never a dull moment , but yeah , we went up there often . Yeah , because it was one of those like divey cool , like it wasn't a dive bar but like as we went so it got to the point where we went so much , it was kind of like you know , kind of home base and we kind of felt we had to .
Speaker 3We knew the owner , somebody knew the owner , or something like that and we kind of had to run out of the place , you know like I mean , it wasn't like too long before I think we we started having like bigger shows there . We played our first show there . I think we played on a Sunday night and like , and it was like it was like a week later we actually played like our first like official show . Like we already had our official show booked at the Aardvark in Fort Worth .
Speaker 3Aardvark yeah , we wanted to play at Spencer's on a Sunday and I was like well , it's a good warm-up show , you know , let's go do that . So we just had pretty much just friends out there , yeah . But the more we played Spencer's Corner , the bigger those shows got . And you know , before too long I mean it was , those were some fun shows .
Speaker 2How long was that first set , the first time we ever played , did you do a full ?
Speaker 3night . No , it was probably like . We probably had a total of like two hours , I think the first time we started playing we had two hours .
Speaker 2What are some of the first songs you remember , oh ?
Speaker 3we're still playing some of them . We're still playing some of them . Yeah , I mean , vaseline was in there , spiderwebs was in there .
Speaker 2What I Got was still in there that practice you had in the living room . What were ?
Speaker 1Was the president's in there . I remember the first time we practiced we had the concept of , like Aaron just had the concept of just good music . And so I think , we probably practiced a Death Cab for Cuties song .
Speaker 3There was Death Cab and Jimmy , I think you're right actually .
Speaker 4That's probably just because .
Speaker 3I wanted to play a Death Cab song more than anything . You guys want to start a cover band so I can play Death Cab .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 3That's why Paul joined , so he could do Sabotage , yeah yeah . But we did play for a couple of New Years and we got to play the New Years by Death Cab for Cutie , okay , and so that was like just a bucket list . Cool Done Did that . We got to do it for like two years , I think we did .
Speaker 2Death Cab . You got your glass jaw . I've done glass jaw with y'all .
Speaker 3Now I'm feeling great . We did some Weez , didn't we ?
Speaker 4do El Scorcho or something .
Speaker 3Early on . Definitely didn't say any of so .
Speaker 1I think so was the first one . Okay , I Got a Girl was an early one that I wish we would bring back .
Speaker 3That was that Wild Rooster . We started playing . I Got a Girl .
Speaker 1Was it Wild Ro Street yeah .
Speaker 3Okay , spin Doctors was one of my favorites , oh , spin Doctors , definitely . Two Princes , yeah Two .
Speaker 1Princes , that was definitely one of the first ones . I remember we played Graduate a few times . That was fun . Yeah , Graduate was a movie .
Speaker 3We played Impression that I Get . We used to play that .
Speaker 1Really .
Speaker 3There's videos on YouTube . You can find How'd you do the brass I think Adam played it on guitar . He transposed to guitar for the brass . It sounded pretty good . There's videos on YouTube for that one . But yeah , Spencer's band , that was a different world .
Speaker 2Yeah , was it in . Did you say it was Fort Worth ? That ?
Speaker 3was in .

Speaker 1The first show we played . I just remember we got loaded up and I was nervous as hell . I was chain smoking outside .
Speaker 3Everyone smoked at the time . We all smoked .
Speaker 1I finally come in . I was there early , I didn't know what to do . I finally come in and there's one lady who's just clearly been there from open . It was just having a great time time , but very clearly drunk are you boys gonna play , yeah , yeah that's , that's how it was , and I was like this is a really cool introduction to life as a band member spencer's corner felt like a more alive uh lobby in the beetlejuice movie when they're in the lobby of the dead .
Speaker 3You know like it just felt like that , had that vibe , that color that you know like it was yeah , oh yeah , very colorful cast of characters .
Speaker 4Yes , every time .
Speaker 3It was a checkerboard floor dance floor .
Speaker 4Really .
Speaker 3Yeah , checkerboard dance floor with , like the bowling alley , carpet around the outside of it .
Speaker 2Like the 90s pattern .
Speaker 3Yeah , they had the big bar in the back and you had like little sidebars like around there and just they had pictures on the wall of like the heyday , of like the 70s and 80s All these like local hair metal like V-cuts down to the fucking dick and shit like that here and just like all over the wall .

Speaker 3If you were 22-year-old , matt , and you had CDs in the CD player in your car , they had those back then .

Speaker 2play out for you . We were talking about the Dicks' origination .

Speaker 5You guys were talking about needing a guitar player on either Facebook or MySpace . It's been a minute After Adam was leaving the band and I messaged you guys . I was like oh man , I would love to play for you guys . I've seen y'all . It's a fun show , it's a great party . And then y'all didn't hire me . And then y'all did hire me .
Speaker 2That's the crushingly short version . Wait , so you guys publicly posted that you're looking for someone it was early Facebook , late MySpace .
Speaker 1Did the Dick Buildings ever have a MySpace ? No , no , no .
Speaker 3It was strictly Facebook .
Speaker 5The long version is I'm a metalhead from a small town , so the only work I've played guitar since I was eight . I'm 37 , so we're getting up there on it . But the only work I could get in music to pay my bills like I played in metal bands for fun and it was enjoyable but it was no money in it . So eventually I became an adult and I had to pay my bills . The only work I could get was in country bands and I was on the road with a country band with Ryan McCorder , the guy who played in the band before me , who played in Valera with Evan , played in Valera with Aaron for a long time and McCorder and I were on the road and I was like , hey , man , I'm thinking about hanging this up . The Dick Belding's one of the guitar players . That seems like stable work , good dudes .
Speaker 5And Ryan was like , hey , yeah , they already hired me , so like don't learn a year later , ryan was leaving and then you guys called me and I've been here for I think I'm on year nine .
Speaker 2I think it's nine . Yeah , I think I'm on year nine , so Ryan was only in for a year . He didn't stay too long , okay .
Speaker 5Yeah , it's easy for me to remember . This is going to be very good for your podcast . My best Best friend for years and years and years killed himself and then , I think three weeks later , you guys gave me the call and that was in 2014 . So I always associate it with the year 2014 . Okay , I don't associate it with my best friend .

Speaker 5You know , live , laugh , love , all that fun stuff . You've got to kind of view it a certain way .
Speaker 1I remember that Rachel and I got married in 2010 , because that's the year they announced the iPad . Oh yeah , perfect , the iPad .

Speaker 3A , b , A , b . Lord , I just remember when we started playing , because I get a Facebook thing that says like an anniversary , yeah , like when we played like Spencer's Corner or something . Oh , it's been that long Cool .
Speaker 5Yeah , I remember when you guys hired me I set my Facebook like job was like , because you could put your job on there . It was like delivery technician at the Dick Belding's but it would never sync with the actual Dick Belding's account , so when I clicked on it it would just go into the middle of nowhere .
Speaker 3It was just like a link hole . Is that something I had to accept or something ? Yeah , I have no idea .
Speaker 5I've since deleted it .
Speaker 2I don't want anybody to know what I did .
Speaker 3I'm thankful for those Facebook , so Matt came through when we started I think when we started playing the Wild Rooster in the poor house , so I played poor house with you guys , I never played Rooster .
Speaker 5I went to every Rooster show . You didn't play Rooster . No , I played Rooster . I'm thinking of the bar that was down 7th Street a little bit . That was .
Speaker 3Rooster I think . I remember you came to the Rooster one year and you were not playing , but you were wearing a kid's Spider-Man costume . Yeah , y'all played a Halloween show and I went to a .
Speaker 5Walmart and I got a Spider-Man costume that was like ages 6 to 8 .
Speaker 3I just remember it was ripped as shit .
Speaker 5I stretched it over my body . The bit was , I was going to show up to the bar and have a very obvious impression of what my dick and balls look like . Because I stretched an 8-year-old's costume over my whole body and it started like ripping and holster like shoulders , back , knees , anywhere that where it could like pivot . It just started ripping . So by the end of the night I I had a pair of jeans and a t-shirt in my car but I couldn't change out of the spider-man outfit . So , secretly , that whole show like 75 of that show I watched y'all wearing jeans and a t-shirt , but under it I had an eight-year-old Spider-Man costume .
Speaker 3Underneath it , you were .
Speaker 4Spider-Man Just stretched all the way through my ass crack . I mean that was in case something went down . You know , something goes down like you're ready for it .
Speaker 5I just remember running around that bar like I'm Spider-Man . The bit was that now you know exactly what my penis looks like . You know you got to live .
Speaker 3Oh God , I remember that one very . I forgot about that , honestly .
Speaker 5I'm super pumped to not tell my wife that I did that one time , don't tell her about this podcast .

Speaker 5So I remember so y'all were playing at the time . It was called Queen City Music Hall .

Speaker 5Yeah , I learned a couple of tunes the same way . So we passed the torch from Ben to you , ryan . He didn't lead me to believe this . I think this was self-preserved I'm not trying to throw anybody under the bus here , but I or not preserved self-convinced , but I was half under oppression of like hey , we might , like I'll play the first set , you play the second set , might do it , we might . I told a bunch of people like I'm playing the second set , come on out . And I had like five , six , seven , eight friends go to that . And then it became very evident after a while that that was not going to happen , and so I got kind of tanked .
Speaker 3I remember that . I remember that After that I played at O'Shea's in Hurston .
Speaker 5Larry's been good to us ever since .
Speaker 2Did Larry own the rooster and O'Shea's at the sea ?
Speaker 3So he bought the rooster and then changed it to the uptown tavern . Okay , and then . So we it was with uptown tavern for a little bit , which was the same as the rooster , Gotcha , but I it was .
Speaker 4It was not the same as a rooster .
Speaker 3It was not the same as the rooster it did not have but like it was eaten , a rooster ball I forgot about that .
Speaker 5I forgot about fried mashed potatoes , didn't they ?
Speaker 3have , like green hatch , chilies in them or something like they were delicious . Yeah , I fucking forgot about those I burned the roof of my mouth so many times on those things like we're like the next day , like skin just falling off my mouth turns into fucking nuclear wave .
